Scone Sweet Scone

Heart-shaped scones are an easy-peasy Valentines Day breakfast treat (or really an any day, anytime treat). Many Prudent Mamas are obsessed with the recipe Jacinda posted last year for Kevin's Famous Scones.  I used to dislike scones (because I was used to coffee-shop-chain, dry, day-old-biscuit tasting suckers), but these are moist and flavorful, and most of all, EASY. If you are part of our facebook circle of love (join the party at facebook.com/prudentbaby) you know that I made a batch with frozen raspberries last saturday and my husband and child ate EVERY SINGLE ONE before I got to snap a pic or even taste one!

Since they were so well received and so darn easy to make, I whipped up another batch on Sunday. This time I was out of frozen fruit, and actually out of real fruit too, actually pretty much out of everything because I hate going to the grocery store...

...but, my point is, I had to scrounge the cupboards for scone flavors, and I ended up using dried yogurt cranberries and a tangerine from our tree.  Super deelish!  You can make yours with any filling ingredients, and the heart shape will just make them that much sweeter.

The whole thing takes about five minutes to mix together and a bit more to bake, making these scones a simple sweet treat for a lazy morning. THANKS KEVIN!

FRIDAY {SURPRISE} PRIZE

This week we are giving away the goods to make your own Pretty Potholder: Part 2, meaning 7"x18" of Jacinda's beloved chicken fabric and matching gray bias tape. We are letting you supply your own recycled towel.

This week's winner is from this morning's Link Love post, because, well, we're suckers for a compliment (and we're proud of our teeth). Jessica from A Little Gray said: Can I just say I love the picture of you two up there on the welcome? I don't know how long it's been there, but I'm just noticing it. It says, "Hi, we are the two moms putting our heads together to bring you Prudent Baby. Plus, we both have really nice teeth. Nice to meet you."

Go ahead and send us your address using the contact form and we will send you your prize. Winners have 5 days to contact us before forfeiting their prize to another lucky reader.

Simple Photo Tips for Better Product Shots

I whipped up a potholder that sadly didn't turn out quite as I had hoped, BUT it will serve a purpose for us in this post, modeling some common photo errors we often make when shooting pics of our creations. Now I am no photography expert and most of the shots on Prudent Baby are taken with a fancy camera, but I do have a few tips to offer that will work with basic cameras. I whipped out the old point & shoot to show you a few common photo mistakes that you can easily address to make sure your product photos (and maybe your SEWING MACHINE DOUBLE DOWN CONTEST entries) are as good as can be, whatever camera you are working with.

Crib Sheet Tutorial: Part 2

Back when Prudent Baby was in it's umm... infancy, Jaime did an awesome tutorial for a crib sheet that rocked our world. Beautiful designer crib sheets for a fraction of the cost of the pricey sets without all the stuff you don't end up using like bumpers and comforters!?! Her version used elastic only at the corners and was the perfect quick project, especially and if you have a narrower width fabric - 45/45." But some of you have asked for a version with elastic all the way around for a more polished look and more snug fit so here it is. Get the fitted crib sheet tutorial: part 2 after the jump.

Don't you love Gordon's Sock Croc? He was a gift from The Nesting Spot. There are no crocs in stock (har) but she will make you one if you message her. He is seriously awesome, like 2 feet long.Read more »

Un-Romantic Valentines Day is Back!

Throw your guy an Un-Romantic Valentines Day and fall in love all over again!

We told you about our tradition of Un-Romantic Valentines Day last year here: Un-Romantic Valentines Day, and y'all seemed to like the idea. The re-cap: My hubs and I started this tradition eight years ago, after he made it clear he thought it was a little unfair that men are expected to wow us ladies on Valentines Day AND anniversaries, while we all just sit back and wait to be showered with romance of a sort men don’t usually enjoy that much. I thought that was pretty reasonable, so we made a deal: On our anniversary he would plan something special for the two of us, and in exchange I would take on Valentines Day and plan something HE would think was fun. Turns out, Valentines Day is his favorite holiday!

The whole point of the day is to plan something you would not ordinarily want to do, something ridiculously manly and out of your comfort zone. Then smile the whole time and act like you love it. And buy him a treat you don’t approve of, like beef jerky sticks or an axe, but more on that in another post.

Take a look at some of some of the things pictured above that we've done for Un-Romantic Valentines Day (and get inspired for your own Un-Romantic date) here: Un-Romantic Valentines Day: Do it for the Man You Love.

Do you think this is something you would do? Do you have any ideas to suggest for Un-Romantic Valentines Day dates? Share in the comment and you might win some purty fabric and bias tape!

DIY Blooming Heart Valentines Decoration

While I was "working" (i.e. scoping out the web for cute Valentine's day tutes) I came across this gorgeousness on Punkin Pattern. I'm so glad I discovered this site, there's so much cuteness there!

I asked the creator, Vanessa, if she would share the tute with us, and she agreed.  I see so many variations on this, I just love how it's sweet but not as saccharine as some traditional Valentines day decorations.

I'm a bit of an origami freak so I adore this beauty!

You may remember that I was looking for a pattern for a sweet baby hat with ears. Alas, I never got around to making poor Gordon a hat but look at this sweet shop that a friend sent our way!! Now to choose a favorite. The owl? The koala? The monkey? Beware, looking at this shop will make your ovaries ache.

This new-to-me crochet pattern is a beautiful alternative to the granny square

And if that's not enough crochet-fun for you (we learned there are ALOT of yarn-mad readers here on Prudent Baby) here are a few more patterns we liked.

Crochet Basket Weave Baby Afghan.

Crochet Swirls. Such a sweet little accent for a hat, headband or sweater.

Crochet Sheep Earmuffs Tutorial.

Aren't these Crocheted Crocodile Necklaces the sweetest?

And lastly ('cause the baby is resting up for a night of torturing mama) something for the fellow cooking nerds... Have you heard that America's Test Kitchen has a radio show? You can download episodes from the website. Check out this weeks episode...
This week on America’s Test Kitchen Radio, we’re investigating the business if running a restaurant and what it really takes to be a successful restaurateur. We’re tasting premium butter, we’ll find what’s hot and what’s not in the world of kitchen gadgets, and we’ll travel back in time to discover the origins of Chiffon Cake. And of course, we’ll be taking your calls to answer all your cooking questions.

Stuffed Animal Storage Solution

We Prudent Mamas have discussed toy storage over the years (check the Toy Storage: Nooks & Crannies post for how we roll in the Curtis household); it's a first world problem for sure - where to put all these luxurious toys our tots are lucky enough to possess? I've found that as baby grows, the stuffed animal collection grows at a 10X rate. I had a little eureka moment when I spotted this laundry bin and it's worked out so well, I thought I'd share.

The stuffed animals go into the laundry bin. Because it's a wire hamper, they can be pulled out the sides, without toppling said bin. They also always feel accessible, as opposed to boxes, closet shelves, or those nets you hang from the ceiling. It works for us, do you think it would work for you? Find out where I got it and links to some more storage and organization tips after the jump...

Give us your stuffed toy storage tips in the comments, and you might win some of that pom pom trim Jacinda's been petting.

Drunk on Yarn

Another of my top-most-favorite Jacinda posts ever: Wine Rack as Yarn Storage. While Jacinda is enjoying her new baby, I'm sharing some of my favorite Jacinda tutes & inspiration. Would you agree with me that this is pure genius?

For me, it was one of those eureka, a-ha moments in craft organization...it just blew my mind. I immediately jumped out of my chair and organized my own yarn: Wine Rack as Yarn Storage Part 2.

Sigh, it makes me so happy. If you are feeling a bit yarn-toxicated, check out some of our yarn tutes here.

How do you store your yarn? Do you hang on to wine long enough to require a wine rack? What else could you use a wine rack for? Your comment could win you a yard of gorg pom pom trim.
