Link Love

I'm obsessing over Lay Baby Lay's nursery style boards. This Little Partner warms my Texas-transplant heart. Tons of inspiration for me! I shared their Steve McQueen Vintage Nursery over on Babble today. And EVERYTHING in Pink Sunsets and Tangerine Dreams would look perfect in my girl's shared room.

Holy mother of peanut butter. Kyla Roma shares her recipe for No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Chews (of Hyperbole Worthy Deliciousness) They are even vegan but I won't hold that against them. Let me just say that Link Love is in danger of not being written because I want to go make these this instant. And how about those fingernails? LOVE.

Creative Jewish Mom shares a redic simple and chic vase project. Might have to whip up a couple of these to finish my patio.

ALSO:

Erin's Creative Energy shares a great tutorial on Using Fabric Dye Sticks. Cute!

Everyone loves chalkboard! This Chalkboard Sugar Cookie tutorial from The Sugar Turntable is sure to impress for back to school! Lot's of fun tutes over there.

The Craftaphile shares how to turn any old basket into a pretty picnic basket step-by-step.

Make and Takes lets us in on how to make homemade microwave popcorn MacGyver-style.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I am thrilled to learn that I can make foaming hand soap with any old liquid soap and water. My husband insists on the stuff but I find the available scents limiting. Mrs Meyer's Foaming Hand Wash, here I come!

Jaime and I also write for Babble...

I'm giving away A Stocked-Up SaraBear Diaper Caddy by Munchkin. Please do enter.

Jaime is giving away a Melissa & Doug Trunki. You want one. Trust me.

If you missed it... here are 25 FREE Baby Blanket tutorials that I rounded up.

Jaime shares a utensil-friendly Bento Box for kiddos eats and a new line of boys clothing designed by a Project Runway winner. Can you guess which one?

Stay tuned for a new Fabric Friday this afternoon!

How to Sew Zipper Pillows with Piping

While working on My New Backyard project, I decided that sewing tons of pillows and cushions was key to keeping it all feeling like an outdoor room and being comfortable while lounging about.

I wanted contrasts of different textures, and I knew piping and trim would help tie the colors and feels together, so I made several different styles of piped pillows. Because these cozy poufs would be living outside, I also knew that being able to easily wash them was key to their longevity, so I used zippers to make sure the covers were removable.

We showed you how to sew basic zipper pillows (with hidden zippers) and how to sew zipper pillows with sham edges, but I've never run you through sewing a zipper pillow with piped edges.

So let me show you How to Sew Zipper Pillows with Piping after the jump...

How to Build a Pallet Daybed

The highlight of My New Backyard patio redecorating scheme has most definitely been this pallet daybed. I really wanted a place to sleep outside with my daughter, and a comfy couch to relax on with friends. I didn't have the funds to invest in a fancy piece of outdoor furniture, and I knew that with the weather as it is in Los Angeles, I could leave this outside pretty much all summer. I also knew that I would, at some point, need to move it under the awning to keep it dry, so I put it on wheels. And finally, I knew I would need arms, because I'm just not comfy on a couch without arms. So here is the DIY Pallet Daybed I came up with.

I built this myself, with no help at all, in just a few days. I'm a crafty person and comfortable with tools, but I'm not an advanced woodworker by any stretch of the imagination, and this project was simple enough for me, so I know you can do it if you want to. Let me show you how to make your own DIY Pallet Daybed after the jump.

FABRIC FRIDAY!

Doesn't this print just make you want to roll in a bed of flowers? It's Joel Dewberry Heirloom Rose Bouquet in Sky from Fabricworm, and we have a yard of it to give away to one Prudent Mama! We've decided to change up Fabric Friday, so this week, instead of our favorite comment of the week, we're going to award the prize in the traditional way; by randomly selecting a winner from this post's comments. So to enter, leave us a comment on this post telling us what your favorite flower is and why. Mine is a toss up between peonies (so luscious, and the way they change color in the vase is magical) and ranunculus (i love their sculptural stems). Leave your comment anytime between now and next Friday, July 29th. Tweet, stumble, or share on facebook and leave another comment letting us now. Come back every day for new entries. We'll randomly select a winner and announce right here next Friday.

Adorbs free printable air-mail themed thank you notes on How About Orange.

Love these little wearable necklace planters!

Cute little hand sewn notebooks DIY.

Spice container magnets DIY at Martha Stewart. Can you imagine anything cuter on your fridge (besides your kid's drawings of course)?

This bracelet is amazing. AND super simple to make! Get the full tutorial at Honestly WTF.

Loving this simple DIY boot box, could use one for my gardening shoes.

I might have to try this homemade mosquito repellant recipe.

I was recently interviewed by dating guru Jenn X for her column on men, dating, and Los Angeles. I don't know much about dating or men, but I know LA pretty well. Here's what I had to say. Wondering, did your mom say the same thing to you? And have you found it to be true?

Why does it seem like kids could read the same books every bedtime and be totally happy? Do they not understand that it always turns out the same? I realize it is me that gets bored (i know olivia by heart), and I'm okay with that. Books are one thing I never feel guilty about buying more of. Hence, I'm always looking to expand our library. So I was very excited to see that fellow babble blogger, temporary ex-pat, mother of six, and generally awesome human being, Gabrielle Blair (also known as Design Mom), compiled a list of her Top 50 Picture Books. I couldn't agree more! I even found a few we didn't know about. Definitely check it out.

Cucumber Limeade recipe.. Want. With vodka perhaps? Oh, that reminds me of the recipe for Infused Cucumber Vodka I shared last year. Get on that!

I'm off with the hubs for a vaca to the US Virgin Islands next week. It's our first vacation since driving the autobahn six months pregnant (wrote an essay about that here: Motherhood as the End of Adventure?) - that was almost FOUR YEARS AGO. Got any tips on restaurants, activities, or beaches that we simply must-not-miss?

Good thing we chose the USVI, because I just went to look for my passport and cannot find it. Why do I suspect it's covered in stickers and shoved in a toy bin somewhere, hmm. Should have made an adorable passport sleeve with the detailed tutorial at bunnybum, then sewn it to my hand or something.

We both write weekly columns for Babble. Here's what we were sharing this week...
A round up of 12 edible flowers and how to cook with them.
Giving away three sets of mother-daugher matching Hello Kitty Vans: Enter now.
What Jacinda is packing for her trip to Mexico (love that swimsuit for post baby bod, can't believe it's so inexpensive!), and the cutest mexican-inspired kid fashion and gear. We are both obsessed with those baby dresses, we have in all colors, so good for hot summers.
Sharing eight mini version of mid century modern furniture classics.
Giving some love to my ultimate favorite shoes.
Knee socks: not just for knees.
Taping our kids into their rooms.
Liking these fair trade felt toys and our new fave bubble bath.

¡Mexi-Cute!: Mexican-Inspired Gifts for Baby [slideshow]

Are you annoyed with me yet? I’M IN MEXICO! LISTENING TO THE WAVES CRASH FROM MY PRIVATE PATIO! It’s good. So good. I love Mexico and it seems that lots of crafty folks are inspired by this beautiful country too. Here are some of the gorgeous mex-inspired baby goodies that I found around the inter-web. I guess you don’t have to be sipping a margarita on the beach of Mazatlan to be inspired by Mexico (but it’s nice work if you can get it.)

How to Sew Rope Trim & My Embroidered Seat Cushions

I showed you how to make a traditional tufted seat cushion a few weeks back, but after living with it on the patio for a few days, I decided i wanted something more colorful. When i discovered this gorgeous embroidery pattern for the woman in a headdress at urban threads, I had a vision for the new seat cushions.

This is really a standard pillow with a tie, but the interesting thing is sewing on the rope trim. I experimented with a variety of ways to do it, and I'll show you what worked best. Learn how to make a rope trimmed seat cushion after the jump...

12 Edible Flowers and How to Cook with Them

As y'all know, I love gardening. In fact, my daughter and I take great joy in cultivating our little Backyard Farm we keep updating you on. For the most part we grow vegetables, but we also have gorgeous roses bushes and bulbs that deliver beautiful flowers throughout the year, which we snip and display around the house or bring to school for teacher. These colorful little blossoms bring a little dose of happiness wherever they go, and growing and using them is a great activity for bonding with your children and teaching them about nature and where food comes from. This year we are also cultivating some edible flowers that we can use to display, cook with, and even give away as little gifts. Let me tell you about 12 Edible Flowers you can grow at home, what they taste like, and how to use these edible flowers in your recipes in a variety of ways here: 12 Edible Flowers You can Grow at Home and How to Use Them.

I know there are so many more edible flowers, tell us what we missed in the comments!

How to Block Print Fabric

I showed y'all My New Backyard and promised some tutorials. One thing I did was to block print some fabric with a chevron pattern. I couldn't find a fabric I liked to cover the cushion with, I wanted a linen with a sort of handmade feel to it. So I block printed my own.

Then I sewed it into a cushion cover (using the exact same method as I did in my tutorial on sewing a crib sheet, with the measurements adjusted to the measurements of the seat cushion).

I'm really happy with the way it turned out. Let me show you How to Block Print Fabric after the jump...

These rope pearly tapestries strike me kinda like an easier and more colorful version of my new obsession, macrame. They would have looked fab on my patio right? I think you could use this to DIY a rug too! Full tutorial at freepeople.

I know I've mentioned my love for doilies here on PB many times. I have a doily collection that grows with every trip to the flea market. To me they just feel like holding love in your hand - the attention and time some woman somewhere gave to that detailed creation, the peace it brough her to sit there crocheting it. I just adore them. But they just end up in a box in my office, because so many of my doily projects end up looking a little too shabby-chic for my tastes. Here's one that hits the sweet spot, modern & timeless. And easy to do yourself! Get the tute for this amazing doily lamp at handmadeology.

Umm, hello, who knew you could make something so cute out of paperclips and string? I want these earring. Get the full tutorial at Evie S.

I adore this window treatment! So much easier than you would ever think from looking at it, and just the perfect adornment to turn a dormer window into a nook of beauty and awesomeness. Can you imagine a little tea party here, like you were in a French cafe?? Get the full DIY at Less-Then-Perfect Life of Bliss.

One of the cutest bag tutorials I've seen in a while, get the full scoop on how to make this retro duffel bag at Saltwater Kids.

This is so cool for any patio-re-doers out there, wish I had seen it sooner. How to make a solar powered light out of a jar. It's like your own bottle of fireflies!

This is a fun handbag, even if you're not a dungeons and dragons player (but especially fun if you are) at Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories.

My mom used to make monkey bread when I was a kid. It was my favorite gooey breakfast treat. I still love gooey breakfast treats, but not as much as I used too. So this garlic parmesan pull apart bread recipe is just up my alley. Get it at The Pastry Affair.

I know we have many overseas readers, so I thought y'all might be interested in this super cool post in which Sara shows us how she converted her beloved 110-volt sewing machine when she moved to London, at Craft Snob.

Here's a secret link to my book, Prudent Advice, for only $5. It's for editions with like a bent corner or some such. Shh, don't tell anyone.

As you know, we both write posts 5 days a week for Babble. Here's what we were sharing this week...

  • Our favorite comment of all time. Like we literally had to talk to each other on the phone about how much we loved this comment and also to discuss our theory that random.org has a sense of humor.
  • Sharing the source list and links for where to buy all the non-diy goodies from my patio redesign.
  • Rounding up 25 of the Cutest and Coolest Free Tutorials for Boy's Clothing. Side note: with all the polite pleads for boy tutes we get, I was surprised to see that the round up of 25 free tutorials for girl's dresses was about three times as popular. Which makes me wonder, have all the boy mamas given up hope? Don't despair ladies! There is so much in there that you can make for those boys of yours that they will love! Capes, suspenders, jackets, vests, belts, lots of pants and shorts. You tell me what's missing and I'll go find or gosh darn it, I'll make it myself.
  • Now that you are all ready to sew for your little dude, check out our round up of Ten Fabulous Fabrics for Boys.
  • Showing off baby Gordon's DIY Nursery, decked out in the aforementioned fabric and a multitude of cute details.
  • Lest you think we have adandoned the girly girls, we're sharing our daughter's new favorite shoes, loving the combo of girlie cute and classic comfort: Hello Kitty Vans.
  • Rounding up our 15 Favorite Tea Party Sets, some to buy, some to DIY.
  • In case you missed it, Jacinda has decided to give Baby Led Weaning a try and is looking for some advice. Hey Jacinda, I want an update. I like the idea but I'm afraid I'd be too much of a nervous nelly. What do you think ladies? Tell Jacinda about it here.

We are often asked how we have the time to surf the web so much and find all of these lovely things to link too. Answer? We don't. We use stumbleupon. It's so fun. You tell it your interests (crafts, sewing, kids, etc) and it randomly shows you sites based on how much other people who share your interests like them. And the more you use it the more it learns about what you like, so you find cool stuff so much faster. I'm kind of addicted. If you want to follow us on it and share fave links and such, I'm here and jacinda is here.

Just for fun: A Pop Quiz. You already knew this fact, I'm sure, but scientists have finally given us conclusive proof. They conducted a study to find out what the most annoying sound in the world is. The results are in. Can you guess? Think about it for a sec and I'll tell you after the jump...

My New Backyard (and Where to Buy)

Last week I showed you the time-lapse video love letter I made to my new backyard. A month or so before that I showed you the before pictures here. Now, if you'll indulge me, here are some lovely photos by Raya of Raya Photography (she does weddings and family photography too, book her if you're in the market, she's amazing).

That's me and my friend champagne! Let me show you some more of her lovely shots and tell you where I bought everything (90% with my membership rewards points, i shelled out almost no actual cash money=if you have an amex, you'll likely be shocked by the number of places you can use those things) in case you see something you want to snag...
