Last week I showed you how my mom gave Clare's favorite dress a second life with some yo yo applique. Here is a little tutorial for How to Make Yo Yos...  just like my mama taught me and her mama taught her. Once you know how to make them, you can use them on anything from t-shirts to hair clips. You can even make an entire bedspread by sewing them together like my grandmother did here. Talk about scrap busting!

From one Hot Mess Mommy to another, I'm sure you know how hard it can be to find cute boy projects. I mean, my daughter is no problem. I can put that kid in pink, ruffly dresses any day, but when my son came along I had to change my strategy.

When my husband gave me a pile of his old button down shirts that he couldn't fit into anymore, I came up with the idea to do a series called "Button Down Rehab" where I took my husband's old button downs and gave them a new life. Some friends agreed to join me, and I used the series as an opportunity to make some cute, new clothes for my son. And today, I'm sharing my Button Down Bib project with you!

Drawstring Soccer Backpack - Made from a Placemat!

Today is the last day to take advantage of the Silhouette Rhinestone Promotion so we have a fun little project to share. Here in suburban land, all the tots carry their soccer ball to practice in a drawstring backpack like this. Since I'm a big-time high-roller, I gave Quinn a soccer ball of her own for her birthday yesterday and made her this fun DIY drawstring backpack to go with it. This is a GREAT boy-friendly gift despite my choices above. The best part is that it's made from a fabric placemat so it comes together right-quick. It's like the Easiest. Pillow. Ever. but you can wear it on your back!

Monogrammed Hair Clip: Part 2

Last week we had a family photoshoot with Angela Richardson from AMR Photography. She was amazing and helped me prepare for the shoot in every way, from make-up suggestions to wardrobe consultation. We decided on a yellow, gray and blue color palette including this little dress for Quinn. It was pretty on it's own but since it was store-bought, I felt it needed a handmade touch.

Coincidentally, I was also itching to play with my new Brother Sewing & Embroidery Machine, so I took the opportunity to update the DIY Monogrammed Hair Clip.

In the end it was a cold, windy and muddy morning (here is Quinn behind the scenes in a cozy blanket) so she wore a gorgeous little denim jacket belonging to the photographers own little girl. The clip didn't show in many of the shots but since Quinn will be wearing this dress for Easter, it will make a second appearance!

Ok, now that it is just us mothers of the pink fiends, I can share what I made this weekend. A princess cape. A pink princess cape... with a fur collar... and tassel pom-pom trim. A princess cape that she has worn non-stop since Saturday. It feels really good to make something that she loves so much. Even if it is heinous.

Top Knot Baby Hat Tutorial

I highly recommend having your babies during a season other than Winter. All this bundling, sigh... Mostly I have been hiding at home but on occasion I venture out to scare the public with my dark circles and lack of personal grooming. On such occasion, I cover Gordon's baldy-bean with a soft little cap, so this weekend I made him a few of these little Top Knot Baby Hats.

They were super easy and quick! A perfect little gift for a new babe and a great use for an old t-shirt or sweater.

Manly Laptop Sleeve Part 2: All Girl

When I saw Jacinda's Manly Laptop Sleeve Tutorial in the queue I was beyond excited! Umm, maybe I should have made one for Carleton Curtis first?  Alas, I did not. This Anna Maria Horner fabric was calling out to be by my side every day!

I used a snap instead of velcro because I'm obsessed with snaps (and I didn't have any velcro) and some fun gold bias tape.  Does it look too old-fashioned?  I hope not, because I kind of love it.

I even did a little piecing and some diagonal quilting using fancy metallic sparkly gold Kreinik thread. Since I know you'll ask, the gold fabric is Anna Maria Horner Innocent Crush Quilt Cotton Loves Me Loves Me Not in Golden, and the flowers are Anthology Fabrics High Society Silo Dahlias in Gold, both from Fabricworm.
