Under-an-Hour Jersey Hat

A few weeks ago, I made an Under An Hour Silkscreened Scarf. While I was at it, I whipped up a little jersey hat. Clare loves that the silkscreened pattern makes her hat and scarf a matching set, but this is also a great t-shirt project. The best part is that you still have time to make a bunch of these for Christmas gifts!

So easy, check it out...

How to Make a God's Eye

When Jaime and I were brainstorming ideas for our patio makeovers we talked a lot about embracing the southwest but with a modern twist. I love how these Native-American-inspired elements contribute to a stylish yet relaxed and approachable space. One of the DIY project that took on the southwest more literally is this giant God's Eye that I made for over my bench. I was out of cash for the patio but needed something large and eye-catching(ha). This did the trick coming in at $3.98 for the two wooden dowels. If you have some nice straight sticks you can make this with materials you already have at home! Your yarn choices can help pull the colors of your entire space together. On a personal level, this project makes me really happy because we had a similar God's Eye that my mother had made, in our house growing up.

I'm not sure how long we will keep this outside. Although it's a covered area, I know this is too fragile for the winds of the wild west. Although since it was so inexpensive I can always make another when it starts to look tired. Want to learn how to make your own yarn-stash-busting God's Eye?

It's nap mat season again! Can you believe it?
Since Quinn is joining big sister at school this Fall, she needs a bed roll of her own.

I followed the original nap mat tutorial with the addition of Ouinn's embroidered name. If you would like instructions for a removable pillow, follow Jaime's tutorial. If your daughter loves her mat so much that she wants one for her doll, check this out.

DIY Recycled Sweater Pants

What a cute project to make an old winter sweater into cozy toddler pants. When gina from The Daily B sent it over, I begged her to share it with us, and she agreed. Make sure to check out her site The Daily B for more great projects and inspiration. Take it away Gina...

I'm sure you have a few sweaters in your closet that are destined for the donation pile. Did you know you can turn them into pants for your little one? This is one of my favorite projects. It's free, and it only takes about 30 minutes to complete. I thought I'd provide a full-fledged tutorial so you can try it at home. Of course, I'm all about winging it, and don't bother with sewing patterns and pinning, so not every pair of pants I make is perfect (in fact, none of them are). But if you're willing to accept my tutorial and all its flaws, let's get started!

You can use vintage fabrics like these, new fabrics, old sheets, a sweater, tea towels, a dirty t-shirt, something fabulous from Fabricworm, anything your heart desires - but when we are done you will be sewing zippers like a pro.

Top Knot Baby Hat Tutorial

I highly recommend having your babies during a season other than Winter. All this bundling, sigh... Mostly I have been hiding at home but on occasion I venture out to scare the public with my dark circles and lack of personal grooming. On such occasion, I cover Gordon's baldy-bean with a soft little cap, so this weekend I made him a few of these little Top Knot Baby Hats.

They were super easy and quick! A perfect little gift for a new babe and a great use for an old t-shirt or sweater.

The Quilting Bug

My sister-in-law made super-sweet quilts for Clare and her cousin Manning for Christmas. This was her first attempt at quilting and they are gorgeous! She bought a "layer cake" (a stack of 10"x10" pieces of fabric) for each and followed this simple yet stunning pattern that she found on the Moda Bakeshop website. This has totally inspired me to make my first quilt this year. How about you? Will you be quilting in 2011? Don't you love these beauties? I adore the way she wrapped the backing, a luxurious minkee, up and around the front to act as her binding. It makes it THAT much more cozy.

The new Denyse Schmidt from Fabricworm would work for a boy or a girl. Love the fresh geometric patterns.

Bias Tape Table Runner: Part 2

When I saw Jaime's Bias Tape Table Runner I fell in love and just had to try one of my own. I thought it would be fun to do something Fall-ish for Thanksgiving on one side and Christmas-themed on the other. That way I can just flip it on November 26th! Also, I had just made this candy cane bias tape and knew it would work really well with our red dishes. The fabrics are Alexander Henry Farmdale Curio Oatmeal and Alexander Henry Merry Moderns.

Jaime's tutorial would also be excellent for placemats! We think we are catching the quilting bug!
