4 Season Crossover Top

This funky little top is so fun. Your little one can wear it over shorts in the summer, or a long sleeve top and jeans in the fall. It's reversible and slips right over little heads.

I made my mine in a heavier fabric that's still breathable and I love the way it turned out, but I think it would also be adorable in a double gauze or cotton lawn or voile.

And a little gold bias tape makes it extra snazzy for little princesses.

Double Gauze Dress

So I sewed this dress for Miss S with every intention of sharing with you a detailed tutorial and a free downloadable pattern.  However, as I was sewing it I came across a few hurdles and thought up some fixes to make a better/simpler project. So I'm pondering working on a new pattern and step-by-step DIY that will allow you to make a similar dress.

But in the meantime, I wanted to show you the final product mostly because this fabric is unbelievably gorgeous and I want you all to get some.  It's a double gauze and so flowy, soft, and cozy.  There are a bunch of beautiful double gauze fabrics also by Kokka still available at Fabricworm, check them out here.

If you'd like me to take another stab at creating a pattern for this dress and sharing a tutorial with you, let me know in the comments.  If you like it, I'll get to work on it now.
P.S. by "get to work", I mean scribble a horrible picture and send it to Jacinda to do the actual pattern drafting, HA.

UPDATE: Here's the (revised) pattern: Prudent Baby Snap Wrap Dress

The UNcrafty Weekend

Have no fear Prudent Mama's, this is not a new blog feature where we tell you all the amazing things (or in this case, unamazing things) that we did the past weekend. But I slacked. Majorly. And have NOTHING to show you. In fact, this is the most crafty thing I did all weekend...and actually, I made that kid in the picture do most of the work. She starts school tomorrow and is soooo excited. I haven't told her that she has to wear closed-toe shoes every day. It might be a deal-breaker.

Other than that... I ate leftover spaghetti and meatballs for almost every meal and snack (yum), watched no less than 7 episodes of Dexter in preparation for the new season (and perhaps one episode of Jersey Shore but I'm not fully willing to admit that here), read The Help in its entirety, got a belated birthday pedicure with my sister-in-law (thanks Becca!), went to the grocery store twice, the gym for the first time since April, changed approximately 15 diapers, and bought a pair of sunglasses at Target. Since coming to the sad conclusion that a mother's sunglasses are basically disposable, Target it is. I actually love them. I told Rick that since they were $125 less than the pair I really wanted, I saved us that money! (Does anyone else say fun things like that to torture their husband?)

I also thought about working on the craft cave but never even stepped foot upstairs.

How about you? Were you productive? Creative? A (quite satisfied but slightly regretful) lazy toad like me? Tell us what you were up to and you could win that adorable fat quarter up there to the left.

And I promise, we have some fun crafty stuff for you this week!

Right? So ladies keep the comments coming because this week one lucky reader is taking home this fat quarter from Fabricworm! Such a fun print for fall.

I was wondering what sneakers (but not sneakers, ya know?) to get for Clare for school and then I saw this gorgeous pic of Scarlet and knew that I had to turn to my own favorite kicks, slip-on Vans. They are so comfy and effortlessly cool. Every girl and boy should own a pair.

Crafty geniuses and all around puddles of adorable, Elsie and Rachel have a new online class open for registration. It's called Small Craft and is designed for anyone who has a cute kiddo in their lives that they'd love to craft for! Doesn't it look like a blast?

I know y'all are already counting down the days until Innocent Crush, Anna Maria Horner's new line, is available in November because we are too. Maybe some of this super-sweet Cloud 9 Forest Friends Organic Flannel can hold you over.

And did anyone else see these amazing wedding "cakes" made from cheese? You know how much we love cheese. I totally would have added this to the dessert table at my wedding. In fact, I want to add it to my breakfast table right now. via Cup of Jo

Plus:

Creative Jewish Mom has some awesome crafts for Rosh Hashana including these apple cards (perfect for any Autumn greeting, really) made with bubble wrap printed paper. love it!

And this month's Martha Stewart Living has a great article called Furniture First Aid. I have to make this kit! Of course this scene cuts to me, 3 months from now, standing above an ink stain on the rug wondering where I saw that article. Jacinda of the future... page 106, September issue of Living.
For other stain-related excitement, this link looks pretty useful too.

This animation of how a sewing machine works had me mesmerized. kottke.org always has something interesting that I haven't seen elsewhere.

A few of you asked about local P-Y-O (pick your own) farms after reading about our Rhode Island adventure. This site seems to have a fairly complete list of farms nationwide. I even found one about 5 miles from my house. With PYO Okra among other local delicacies!

And just a quick shout-out to other DFW area mama's. I'm headed to the Little Bean's First Birthday Party next Friday night. Meet me there, their parties are always fun!

Oh, and last chance to leave a comment and maybe-just-maybe win those adorable paper baking cups up there in the corner. We will announce a winner this afternoon!

A Trip to the Farm

One of my favorite days during our trip home was a visit to Sweet Berry Farm, a Pick-Your-Own orchard and farm in Middletown, RI. It was just one of those afternoons that I think I will remember forever. Know what I mean? We ate a beautiful casual lunch in their little cafe and then headed out to the fields.

DIY Necklace Bib

While poking around the crafty corners of the web I came across this amazing DIY for a hand-stamped faux necklace bib.  It kind of makes me want to wear a bib.  I asked it's creator, Beth from Sand to Pearl, if she'd share the tutorial with you.  Take it away Beth!

Seriously, how adorable is this? It's fashoned after all the new little girl fake necklace t's. This bib is actually for a sweet little girl. Wheezy was born with Cerebral Palsey and even though she is super smart, she can't control her body. At 3 she understands that she's different but she still wants to be just like all the other girls her age. And the other girls don't wear bibs. But since she still has to I've been trying to think of creative ways to make then without making them too baby-ish. Last night I thought this little diddy up and I'm so excited. She's going to LOVE it. I wanted to post this so that others who have little girls with special needs can make them too.

America's Test Kitchen Tour & a GIVEAWAY!

Thanks to Jaime's Awesomeness, I was invited to take a tour of the America's Test Kitchen headquarters while I was in New England last week. As a long-time fan of everything this company does, it was pretty amazing to see where the magic happens. And what is this magic I speak of? Well, among other things, they produce America's Test Kitchen which airs on PBS, Cook's Illustrated Magazine (to which both Jaime and I have both been long-time subscribers) and publish, like, dozens of actually useful cookbooks each year. The day was extra special because they don't typically offer tours. Lucky me! And lucky us, because they let me take a bunch of photos, ask a bunch of questions and they also gave us a great gift for one lucky, lucky Prudent Baby reader.

Thanks Emily and Bailey (and everyone in the kitchen who smiled when we totally got in the way.) It was a great day! And thanks to my fabulous sister Amanda for coming along, and for suggesting that I pose for a second photo after this one:

Really, is there anything less cute than a pregnant lady eating a plate of kim chi?

Confessions of an Adhesive & Sealant Junkie

Maybe junkie isn't the best word.  I just think that sticking stuff to other stuff feels good.  Why is that?  I don't know.  I have tried many different adhesives and sealants in my day, and these are my faves that make up the contents of my shelf/crafting kit. There is nothing worse than being so ready to finish a project, then not having the right glue or spray, so I keep these in stock at all time.  Please if you have one I've overlooked or you think I need to try, share it in the comments!  Get the full low down on the Best Crafting Adhesives and Sealants after the jump...

FRIDAY {SURPRISE} PRIZE!

This week's winner is taking home this fat quarter of double gauze "treffle" matryoshka fabric from Kokka. Check out the whole amazing Kokka collection at Fabricworm!

We started to drool when we read this recipe idea from K. Fox on the Cucumber Mint Popsicle post:

All-time favorite sorbet that I've come up with? Pickled Ginger-Lemongrass-Thai Chili. Yeah. Sounds crazy, but it's really crazy good. The lemongrass and sweet ginger flavor hit you first and is so refreshing, then at the very end that spicy chili comes through and we actually sweat a bit. Simply put one or two chillies (these are HOT), one stalk lemongrass (crack and crush the stalk first to release the aroma and oils), pickled ginger to taste, one cup water and 1/2 cup sugar into a pan, bring it down into a syrup then either churn it in an ice cream maker for small bowls, or pour into popsicle molds. Note: unless your kid is a champ with the spicy this is a better adult indulgence. Haha, and I'm not sure anyone could handle a whole paper cup's worth. ;)
Yum! And since we're on the subject of paper cups - look what we're giving away this week! These Cotton Candy Stripe paper baking cups from our sponsor Bake it Pretty will make sure you are also enjoying a Summer of Fanciful Treats!

Enter to win this giveaway by leaving a comment on any post over the next week. Be hilarious, be ridiculous, be helpful, or just BE. We'll pick our favorite comment next Friday and mail these cuties off. Have a lovely weekend!

Road Trip Mix Time

I'm out in the desert far away from my sewing machine, so I thought I'd share this week's favorite road tunes. And we're heading out with the kiddo for our first 8 hour road trip (to Meemah and Papa's house) next week, so I thought this summer road trip mix might bring a little vibey fun to our adventure, without giving me agita from repetitive "kids" songs. You can check it out in the widget below and if you like it, you can buy any song right through the widget. Kinda neat, right?

Have any great road trip songs we should bring along?  Let us know in the comments and you could win that awesome fabric up there on the left. I'm also especially interested to know what was THE song at your Prom. Seriously.

Cucumber Mint Popsicles

A few weeks ago reader ERIN sent us her cucumber popsicle recipe.  Loving the idea, I immediately went outside and picked a few.

These popsicles take just a couple minutes to throw together, and they taste so refreshing.  They were a hit so I had to make more, adding mint to the second batch. Deelish!

Thank you Emily, they are amazing! And a pretty cute way to use those ABC Paper Cups from Pint Size Social!

Note: I didn't realize the cups were spelling "ritz" until just now. Have you made fresh fruit popsicles this summer?  What flavor should we try next?  I have heard jalapeno is good in popsicles, does that sound crazy? Share with us in the comments and you could win the gorg fat quarter up there to the left.

Rick-Rack Baby Blanket

Elisabeth from Growing Home is back with another gorgeous DIY for us. A Rick-Rack Baby Blanket! This is an excellent beginner project, a thoughtful gift and a perfect way to display your favorite fabric in baby's room. I think I need to make baby Vlad (not his real name) a robot blanket! And if you love this look, also take a peek at Jaime's Rick-Rack Place Mat tutorial.

And don't forget, any comment you leave this week could win your that gorgeous fabric up there to the left. Let Elisabeth know how much you love her project, and while you're at it, let me know how you spell ric(k)-rac(k). The internet seems to be confused and so is Jacinda.

Take it away Elisabeth!

Lately, it seems that conception is in the air. More friends than I can count are having babies, which means that I'm very blessed to have LOTS of baby showers to attend. Now, I love celebrating mommas, love welcoming new little ones, and especially love an excuse to get away from my own responsibilities and chat it up with my girlfriends. However, I get a little bored with my baby gifts. Or maybe not bored, just bummed, because what I WANT to buy my friends is something lovely and unique and surprising (like a hand-knitted mobile from a fun boutique...) and what I can fit into my gift budget is a package of Dr. Brown's bottles. And honestly, despite the fact that Dr. Brown's has seen me through two separate years of two separate fussy babies, I would like to have a bonfire and torch all those bottles and their silly parts (I have a weird feeling that I've vented about this before...apparently I'm a little angsty on the subject of infant feeding. Don't get me started on nursing. It was not easy).
Anyway, I have found a solution to my quandry, and it is the DIY receiving blanket.

All the credit for this creation goes to my mom, who made collections of these blankets for Big Brother and Little Brother when they were born. Four for each boy, mostly from adorable, preppy, boyish fabrics like seersucker, gingham, and bright Vineyard-Vines-eque plaids. She had the advantage, of course, of knowing that I was having boys, which I don't always have with friends (as cool as I think it is to wait, I am WAY too much of a control freak to sacrifice all that planning time). If they weren't meticulously packed away in the attic, I'd show you a picture--it would almost be enough to make me want to have another boy to wrap up in all of them. Almost, but not quite.:)

The wonderful thing about these blankets is that you can style them in any way you want, and once you get the hang of it, whipping them out in one evening is quite easy. This bright, funky pattern from Alexander Henry (also available in Pool and Bright) is one I've had my eye on for months, and the impending arrival of my dear friend Megan's third little man was the perfect excuse to snatch it up (I bought it at Whipstitch; if you're in the Atlanta area and curious at all about sewing, you must go there).  Megan's husband is Czech, and the two of them have spent many seasons of their relationship living and traveling abroad, so this pattern seemed particularly appropriate.

For a another friend--a native Southerner who is waiting to welcome her first child--I aimed for something a little more delicate and traditional.

Two totally different looks, huh? The best part is that they are personal, handmade, and FAR more special than something that my meager budget could purchase at Babies R Us. Just don't hold me to making them for every baby...I might have to give up sleeping.

See the full Rick-Rack Baby Blanket tutorial and tons more pictures after the jump.

LINK LOVE

Welcome to a special Sunday edition of LINK LOVE. I was planning to completely blow off Link Love this week (because I'm totally in vacation mode) but we do have some cool things that we want to share with you, plus Sara noticed that it was missing and that made me sad (but at the same time happy that she enjoys Link Love.) Remember, any comment you leave this week might win you that great fabric up there to the left.

Head over to  Blue Eyed Yonder to see Krista's play kitchen project. I'm in love. This is further proof that you shouldn't be in a rush for ALL of your friends to have babies. This kitchen was a birthday gift for SOMEONE ELSE'S KID. Isn't that fantastic?

The gals over at Deucecities Henhouse just opened a SHOP selling their awesome hand-printed greeting cards. I love their style. Check out  Finn's recent birthday party and Elsa's beautiful birthday cake.

How about Orange KILLED IT this week with links to all kinds of fabulous DIYs and downloadables. Start with this DIY for Japanese masking tape twist ties. But don't miss these sweet labels for food cannisters, or this printable for embroidery thread cards. (I need these. Have you SEEN the tangle that is my embroidery thread?)

It seems like I am seeing recipes for Panzanella everywhere. It may be my salad craving that has it catching my eye. This greek version from Annie's Eats might push me over the edge to try it at home.

This is very cool.
Become a facebook fan of Connect Kids to Care and Clorox will donate $1 to the Children's Health Fund, an organization that works to provide health care visits to kids in need.
It's about time that my facebooking actually result in something other than the knowledge that my highschool boyfriend is going to see Phish... again.

And lastly, Jaime and I were asked to share our favorite children's book, illustrator and more, as part of Ohdeedoh's Learning At Home month. Here is Jaime's and here is mine. And here is a list of all of the interviews.

Man, everyone was so helpful and hilarious this week it was really hard to choose a favorite. Maybe we'll just keep the fabric. No, kidding. Our favorite comment came from Melissa of Honeyscrap on the Fresh Fruit Pie post, who said:

My MIL has a similar recipe that involves an instant jello pack. When I first married my hubby I wanted to impress him (of course by showing him I was a better cook than his mother) and when I made the pie I forgot the jello pack...so it tasted like nothingness.
Recently, I tried the pie again (after taking a four year break) and this time the filling was perfect...except I forgot to prebake the crust...so THIS time it tasted like gooey sadness.
I think I need to try this one to boost my baking ego!....and still prove that I am better than his mother:)
If only. I think we should rename the recipe "Better Then His Mother Pie"... but then the world would run out of strawberries and our servers would crash as every wife from Alaska to Zimbabwe downloaded it.  Our MILs read this site so that's all we are going to say about that. Use the Contact Form to send us your address and your fabric will be wrapped and shipped right away. Don't be alarmed if you notice a few dried tears on the envelope, it's not going to be easy for me to say goodbye. Winners have 5 days to contact us with their address before forfeiting their prize to another lucky reader.

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! More double gauze that is...go ahead and drool over this "treffle" matryoshka fat quarter from Kokka.

This beauty could be yours, just enter to win this giveaway by leaving a comment on any post over the next week. Say whatever is on your mind, you delight us. We'll pick our favorite next Friday and mail this luscious fabric off. Good Luck!

Fresh Fruit Pie

This pie was always a favorite for Summer birthdays in my family. We weren't big into cake (I know, crazy.) I love this pie most because you can use whatever fruit is in season and any combination, really. Blueberry is the best but peach is amazing and strawberry is really good too. Blueberry and Peach? I can't even stand how delicious this is. Lucky for us, so much is abundant and inexpensive this time of year. Experiment with any fruit you have on hand! I bet nectarines and raspberries would be so good! The other great part about this pie is that the filling isn't baked.

And remember, any comment you leave this week could win you the fantastical Heather Ross double gauze fat quarters up there to the left. What's your favorite Summer dessert?
