GIVEAWAY: Sewing In A Straight Line by Brett Bara [with Video Tutorial}

As the resident sewing expert at Design*Sponge and on her own site, Brett Bara has shared oodles of gorgeous projects and now she has a whole book devoted to sewing. A book called Sewing in a Straight Line, which is our favorite kind of sewing, so we are delighted to have a copy of her wonderful new book to give away to one of you! We also have this adorable video of one of her skirt tutorials from the book.

Jules said...: When we were in 6th grade my mother was our 4-H leader and we all sewed these smocks (pants optional)and mine was red white and blue stripes worn with white bell bottom pants.Someone has even posted them in flickr and now they are in the 4-H projects group with me tagged! Anonymous said...: Oh my gosh this book looks AWESOME!!! I think the first thing I sewed was probably a gingerbread man in Home Ec from middle school. We had to make it out of felt and then stuff it and sew it. I also used to sew on buttons when I was little; my mom taught me that very valuable skill. :)

But I've never mastered much.... she still does my button holes, and zippers!!!! hehehe!!!! at least they get finished then! My goal in the next year is to complete 6 complete clothing items. I remember this pillow from 7th grade home ec. It was a felt pink ice cream float shape with a clear straw in the top. The first thing I sewed was a small quilt (about the size of a throw pillow) with my mom. I cut out shapes and we designed a little house and a tree, it hung on the wall by my bed forever. It might not have been perfect but I was so proud of myself! I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to want to explore with sewing the way I did. KellyS said...: The first thing I have ever sewn was a tote bag in home economics class in JR high. I still remember it was neon green and black, and I used it even throughout college. I am not sure whatever happened to it! When I got back into sewing for my boys, I made a snuggle blanket (just cut the fabric to size and added binding to the ends). From there it was straight line sewing making rag quilts, and now I am trying my hand at machine quilting. My Grandparents were missionaries, so I couldn't visit with them except when they were on furlough in the US. None of my friends sew or do anything really all that domestic and I wanted to pick up where my grandmother and mother left off! Jenna said...: I think about this all the time. It was 8th grade home ec. I'm sure there were smaller projects before this one, but we had to make sweat pants. I was spending the week with my grandma, and she taught me how to sew. They were horribly boxy, way too short, the left leg hole was bigger than the right, and the elastic was not stretched enough so they wouldn't even stay on. I wish I kept them. There was no home ec in my school, but I borrowed my neighbors Kenmore sewing machine in 10th grade because I really wanted a tie skirt. That was the first thing I sewed… a skirt of men’s neck ties…. And I still have it and occasionally wear it on “skinny days”. It is really sloppily made… especially the zipper part, but I love it! The best part are the triangles on the bottom from the points of the ties.

She used to always bring her backpack pack along while she was learning how to walk so I thought I'd make her a skirt as her school uniform. Meredith said...: I don't remember exactly the very first item because it was a summer of sewing. It was for sure an article of school clothing. I was 11. My mother told me that we would spend the summer sewing and she taught me to sew with incredible patience and teaching skill on my grandmother's Singer foot pedal machine. I still have that machine for sentimental reasons. I didn't grow up in a family that could afford to send us off to camp or to lessons. For most of my adult life I had a career and got away from sewing...but in retirement I rediscovered my aptitude for it and my love for beautiful fabric. I have gobs and gobs of Amy Butler's fabric in my "studio". It was muscle memory when I first sewed again. It was like my hands took over! Unfortunately, I didn't really like it at the time. Ten years later I decided to give sewing another try, and I sewed a summer dress for my 2 year old daughter. She picked out the fabric (red with cats), and I picked an easy pattern. A Plain Path said...: Were we in the same home ec. class? I also make a Pepto Bismol pink heart shaped pillow with lace and it had a white felt applique on it with some embroidery we did. Mine was hideous and I hated sewing until I became an adult and realized that you can make amazing things! I just finished teaching a summer sewing class for 4-H girls in our community. We made purses; something cool and fun that they can use and be proud of. Trying to instill that sewing itch in them that my home ec. teacher failed to give me. ;-); July 26, 2011 at 12:04 PM
