I was in 8th grade Home Economics class. The first thing I remember ever sewing was a pair of pajama pants. The Pajamas were fairly easy and the lines were not straight at all.

Oh my gosh this book looks AWESOME!!! I think the first thing I sewed was probably a gingerbread man in Home Ec from middle school. We had to make it out of felt and then stuff it and sew it. I also used to sew on buttons when I was little; my mom taught me that very valuable skill. :)

Don't really remember the "first thing" I ever sewed - probably a pillow, used to make them a lot as gifts. I started using mom's sewing machine at about 6. But I've never mastered much.... she still does my button holes, and zippers!!!! hehehe!!!! at least they get finished then! My goal in the next year is to complete 6 complete clothing items. Maybe this book would help! Thanks for the giveaway! -

I sewed an applique wall hanging with my name on in the 2nd year comp, I was about12. It was an absolute disaster as we were given no help at all and had to do it all on a machine I couldn't control!

Mom taught me how to cross stitch in grade school so aside from the shoelace-and-punched-cards in kindergarten, that's my first sewing. I remember this pillow from 7th grade home ec. It was a felt pink ice cream float shape with a clear straw in the top. We had to make a late night dash to the craft shop as Mom didn't have enough batting to stuff it with!

I am new to your web page and I LOVE it!! I'm also in LOVE with this book and checked out her web page as well.

The first thing I sewed was a small quilt (about the size of a throw pillow) with my mom. I cut out shapes and we designed a little house and a tree, it hung on the wall by my bed forever. I was about 7-8 years old and its something I'll always remember that my mom and I did together.

I was 7 or 8 and I made a dress for my American Girl doll. I still remember the sloppy cutting, jagged seams, and blue fabric. It might not have been perfect but I was so proud of myself! I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to want to explore with sewing the way I did. I just hope I can be as patient as my mother was!

The first thing I have ever sewn was a tote bag in home economics class in JR high. I still remember it was neon green and black, and I used it even throughout college. I am not sure whatever happened to it! When I got back into sewing for my boys, I made a snuggle blanket (just cut the fabric to size and added binding to the ends). From there it was straight line sewing making rag quilts, and now I am trying my hand at machine quilting. I am completely addicted to sewing and love that I am going to have a baby girl to sew for.

The first thing I ever sewed was a Christmas stocking. It's...something. My mom still hangs it every year but it's fairly sad and pathetic next to all the others. I got frustrated with the machine (an ancient singer of my mom's) and attempting to finish by hand, then just got stymied, so the star I attempted to sew on for decoration is only half-way stitched, etc. I need help.

I think about this all the time. It was 8th grade home ec. I'm sure there were smaller projects before this one, but we had to make sweat pants. To pass, you had to try on your pants and they had to fit. Mine fit but the elastic at the bottom was too tight although i was the closest in the class to making them right!

I made shorts (more like boxers) for myself in 8th grade Home Ec. They were horribly boxy, way too short, the left leg hole was bigger than the right, and the elastic was not stretched enough so they wouldn't even stay on. I wish I kept them. I could pin them up on my design wall as a reminder that whatever I'm frustrated with will never turn out as bad as those shorts.

Oooo… I would love to win Sewing in a Straight Line!
There was no home ec in my school, but I borrowed my neighbors Kenmore sewing machine in 10th grade because I really wanted a tie skirt. That was the first thing I sewed… a skirt of men’s neck ties…. And I still have it and occasionally wear it on “skinny days”. It is really sloppily made… especially the zipper part, but I love it! The best part are the triangles on the bottom from the points of the ties.

I don't remember exactly the very first item because it was a summer of sewing. It was for sure an article of school clothing. I was 11. My mother told me that we would spend the summer sewing and she taught me to sew with incredible patience and teaching skill on my grandmother's Singer foot pedal machine. I still have that machine for sentimental reasons. I didn't grow up in a family that could afford to send us off to camp or to lessons. For most of my adult life I had a career and got away from sewing...but in retirement I rediscovered my aptitude for it and my love for beautiful fabric. I have gobs and gobs of Amy Butler's fabric in my "studio". It was muscle memory when I first sewed again. It was like my hands took over! Many times when I am sewing I find myself silently thanking my mother for her wisdom and incredible talent. I hope she hears that. Meredith

Ten years later I decided to give sewing another try, and I sewed a summer dress for my 2 year old daughter. She picked out the fabric (red with cats), and I picked an easy pattern. It turned out decent, and it quickly became her favorite dress. :-) Needless to say, that was the project that got me hooked on sewing.
