I sewed a purse, first cross-stitched and then sewed it together. It was completed with a magnetic closure which managed to poke my finger as well as through the fabric whilst inserting. Needless to say, I stayed away from the sewing business for a good 5 years before making a full nosedive into it again. I have been sewing so many PJs now that I can do PJ pants in less than 20 minutes including cutting time. lol

I was primary School age, but I did this project at home, because I wanted to. I sewed a top of my own design. It was basically a large rectangle with straps that did up at the front with heaps of eyelets.
I don't know where I got my love of sewing from. In our house growing up the linen cupboard, were things that needed repairing went to die, was called the fifth dimension, because if it went in it would never be seen again.

I sewed a brown dress with a flower print when I was in the 5th grade. The reason that I can still remember the print 50 years later is that my mother made a quilt using the print in a block. The tattered quilt is still around.

The first time I ever sewed was probably in home ec in high school. I remember sewing lines on paper. They weren't straight and they still aren't! The first project I started sewing was a pair of overalls. The second was a quilt. Both if those I did my first year of college. Fast forward 15 years and I have finally completed a sewing project, 2 actually! Both I found on Pinterest. I also have 3 projects that will be starting up soon. I think having my daughter has brought out the wanna-be sewer in me.

I hate to admit it, feminist that I am, but my first sewing project was a crudely made outfit for my Barbie when I was in elementary school Oddly enough, I don't think I have the skills now to sew an outfit for a doll that weirdly proportioned, but back then, I was fearless.

When I was 5, my Mima felt it was time to teach me how to sew so we decided on a pocket sized pillow. She showed me how to thread a needle. I picked three buttons from her special button jar and she guided me through sewing them onto the small squared scraps of cotton fabric. Then I got to sew the pillow together. I was so proud of myself and so was my grandma. Im 33 now and til this day she carries that little pillow with her in her bag. :)

Besides some silly little pillows I sewed by hand when I was young, my first attempt was a wrap-style skirt, using no pattern, just going off the dimensions of a similar skirt I already owned. I think I was in 7th or 8th grade.

Although I would have thought it was stupid at the time, I wish I had had a home ec class where I learned to sew. My next project is recovering cushions from a pair of chairs I bought on Craigslist!

The first thing i ever remember sewing was when i was about 3 or 4 and my brother and i sewed these little 'pillows' that were in the bottom of some baskets. when they were stuffed lightly we sewed the outline around the birds printed on the fabric. I think the baskets with their little stuffed bird pillows were for some sort of odd wall art, but i was immediately enthralled with the feel of needle and thread in my hands.

I think I have about 10 bags in my past with varying numbers of patches, but they've all been phased out by now, first by the toned-down aesthetic of the early 00's and now by bright, cheerful prints!

I don't remember what all I tried sewing, but I remember my mother trying to teach me when I was young and I would ALWAYS jam up the bobbin thread. She never could figure out what I was doing wrong.

I was in 5th grade and was doing the local 4-H sewing & fashion show. My mom helped me make a "nautical" inspired dress. It was navy blue with red, yellow & green boats around the hem. It also had a LARGE white collar....lovely. I was so proud of it and thought I looked so pretty. Great memories!!

My first sewing project was yesterday! I made an laptop case/sleeve. (Truthfully it's the first one I finished). I'm tried to sew so many times with my mom's old 1970's sewing machine. I finally got a sewing machine for myself but lost to pedal during the process. I finally bought a new one last week. And I've been sewing like crazy. This week alone I made an apron, a pillow and a laptop sleeve. My new project is to make a duvet cover. I'm headed off to the fabric store now. [cross your fingers for me.:]

I think the first thing I sewed (by hand) was a beanbag. And then five more. I was the oldest of four kids, and two more down the street, and we wanted to play hop-scotch 'properly.' So I set about sewing five beanbags by hand, and then we got dressed up like girls from the fiftys in poodle skits and saddle shoes, because when your a seven year old girl, half the game is what you wear.
Of course, the beanbags didn't last much more than a week.

When I was a kid, we could choose from doing textiles or wood work for three years in school. Now that was a long time, and many many projects came out of it, I'm sure, but the only thing I remember is my final year, when I made my own prom dress. It was made out of oxblood red satin, full length, strapless, with a black lace embellishment at the top and the bottom.

my mother, who worked part time and raised three girls, used to sew my easter dresses, not to mention other fun things like dresses for my american girl doll and stuffed animals. the first thing i remember making was a pillow (of course! just a rectangle of fabric, right?) when i was around 6. it was far from perfect; the stuffing didn't reach all the corners and it was a bit wonky, but once i started, i couldn't stop. i had more pillows than i knew what to do with.
i sewed on and off during my childhood, but didn't pursue it again until i was in high school. i have since slacked off once again, but am so ready to learn and do more. i particularly want to learn to make some of my own clothes, as well as things for my baby boy, who will be here in october!

My first real project was in Home Ec. 7th grade.
It was a wrap around pair of pants. White with purple ships was the pattern. I never wore them I thought they were ugly. I like quick and east things now. I love to get my 7 yr old grandson to help me sew. I keep my foot under the petal so we don't go too fast. We have fun and he can sew a straight line now. I have a grand daughter on the way so the cute dress will be a perfect start for her older wardrobe.

And when you know that was nearly 2 years ago, you can imagine how badly I need this book!

I love this site; thanks ladies!

I must have been about 10 yrs old and I was part of a group of girls in my church that lead by a wonderfully crafty teacher. My first sewing projects was a felt pink elephant cushion. It was sooo cute. I remember the teacher and her mom thinking it was hilarious that I would insert the needle with one hand and pull it out with the other hand. They set me on the right path, though.
