I sewed a little quilt for my little brother when I was 12.
I was primary School age, but I did this project at home, because I wanted to. I sewed a top of my own design. It was basically a large rectangle with straps that did up at the front with heaps of eyelets.
I don't know where I got my love of sewing from. In our house growing up the linen cupboard, were things that needed repairing went to die, was called the fifth dimension, because if it went in it would never be seen again.
My first sewing project was curtains. Yards and yards of sewing straight lines :)
My first sewing project was a wraparound skirt that my mom helped me design!
I sewed a brown dress with a flower print when I was in the 5th grade. The reason that I can still remember the print 50 years later is that my mother made a quilt using the print in a block. The tattered quilt is still around.
I follow you on fb
When I was 6 or 7, I made clothes for my pound purrie, a little gray kitten named Calliope, using scraps of fabric I pilfered from the "mixed media" bin in the art room at school. I had no sewing machine, so I hand-stitched everything!
I sewed a stuffed animal in Home Ec in 7th or 8th grade and have recently gotten (back?) into sewing.
The first time I ever sewed was probably in home ec in high school. I remember sewing lines on paper. They weren't straight and they still aren't! The first project I started sewing was a pair of overalls. The second was a quilt. Both if those I did my first year of college. Fast forward 15 years and I have finally completed a sewing project, 2 actually! Both I found on Pinterest. I also have 3 projects that will be starting up soon. I think having my daughter has brought out the wanna-be sewer in me.
I like you on Fb
I follow you on twitter
The first thing I sewed was clothes for my barbie and I think I was 7 or 8 years old.
The first thing I ever sewed was a horrible skirt that I made in maybe 6th grade. I used (now called upcycled!) electric blue sweat pants. It was awful but I hand sewed that darn thing for all I was worth....woof.
I hate to admit it, feminist that I am, but my first sewing project was a crudely made outfit for my Barbie when I was in elementary school Oddly enough, I don't think I have the skills now to sew an outfit for a doll that weirdly proportioned, but back then, I was fearless.
I follow PB on FB.
I remember making a simple skirt in Home Ec. Class in 7th grade. Thirty plus years later, I decided to start sewing as a hobby. I want to focus on bags, so far I made one & have pattern pieces cut for the next bag. I have a lot to learn!
My first sewing project was a sock penguin in 8th grade home-ec.
The first thing I sewed was a pincushion for my mom because she use to smock. I don't remember how old I was, but after finishing the pincushion I put white pins in it spelling out I Love You Mom. She still has the pincushion (and the pins are still in it).
Hi there! The first thing I sewed was a Barbie outfit, with my mom's help. I was probably 7 or so, and I of course started out hand stitching. Thank you for the opportunity to win!
Wow. I can't even remember! I think it was a red shirt for myself that my Mom talked me through! I think I was about 11.
A lot of 7th grade first time seamstresses on here. I too sewed for the first time in 7th grade. Our first project was a pencil pouch with grommet holes to put them in our folders. Gotta love straight lines!
my first project was a doll cot quilt. I sewed it with my mum, who taught herself to quilt. I have always been so proud of her for teaching herself to quilt.
When I was 5, my Mima felt it was time to teach me how to sew so we decided on a pocket sized pillow. She showed me how to thread a needle. I picked three buttons from her special button jar and she guided me through sewing them onto the small squared scraps of cotton fabric. Then I got to sew the pillow together. I was so proud of myself and so was my grandma. Im 33 now and til this day she carries that little pillow with her in her bag. :)
The first thing I ever sewed was a breast pillow for breast cancer patients. I was in (I think) 4th grade and my girl scout troop put the organized it.
The first thing I sewed was an outfit for my barbie. I don't remember how old I was but I do remember it didn't fit her.
I follow you on fb.
Besides some silly little pillows I sewed by hand when I was young, my first attempt was a wrap-style skirt, using no pattern, just going off the dimensions of a similar skirt I already owned. I think I was in 7th or 8th grade.
Although I would have thought it was stupid at the time, I wish I had had a home ec class where I learned to sew. My next project is recovering cushions from a pair of chairs I bought on Craigslist!
My first sewing project was a red felt cape for my sisters lizard plushie, i was about 7. It was so bad but being a good sister she immediately put it on and even kept it out for everyone to see.
My first sewing project was a hair scrunchie. I made it with my best friend at her house. It was followed by about 100 hair scrunchies!
I made a skirt at the local fabric shop. I did what they told me and never wore the ugly thing!
A pillow with a zipper closure.
When I was in third grade my mom showed me how to sew sequins onto fabric so I hand stitched sequins to a piece of fabric in the shape of a "J" for my Mom.
I'm just now sewing for the first time in my life...my first little project was a pair of pants for my baby!
I already follow you on Twitter. =)
I like you on FB
The first thing i ever remember sewing was when i was about 3 or 4 and my brother and i sewed these little 'pillows' that were in the bottom of some baskets. when they were stuffed lightly we sewed the outline around the birds printed on the fabric. I think the baskets with their little stuffed bird pillows were for some sort of odd wall art, but i was immediately enthralled with the feel of needle and thread in my hands.
I liked you on facebook
The first thing I remember sewing is a L (my initial) pillow. I'm sure that's not the first thing though because there were curves involved
The first thing I remember sewing was a tote bag I made in a sewing class when I was like 13. The teacher took them all and said she'd bring them back next week for us to paint. Yeah...we never saw those bags again. But bags are my favorite thing to make now!
my first sewing project was a felt patchwork bag i made in hs..it was hidious..raineoc@yahoo.com
i liked you on fb!
Doll clothes - I am not saying they fit!
I first sewed a quilted raw edge purse. It was so fun but I must say I was a little spoiled because the pieces were already cut out for me and the pattern too. The first thing I sewed on my own was a dress for my daughter.. didn't know what darts was and it turned out a huge disaster! Feel free to check out my blog... turningcrafty.blogspot.com
Following on Twitter
The first project I remember is sewing a makeshift pillow by hand. I drew on the fabric with markers and stuffed it with cotton.
Liked on fb!
I first sewed a basic skirt in a sewing class in college. I was pregnant at the time and have never fit into it!!
I think the first thing I made was a little square pillow in 6th or 7th grade Home Ec class.
First sewing project was one of those Esprit-esque tote bags back in the late '80s. It was a disaster and I am quite surprised now to find a new love of sewing. I'm not so terrible any more!
As a dutiful child of the 90's, and hand-sewed about 20 patches from the Army Navy store onto a messenger bag for my first day of high school. I think I have about 10 bags in my past with varying numbers of patches, but they've all been phased out by now, first by the toned-down aesthetic of the early 00's and now by bright, cheerful prints!
7th grade Home Ec. class, whale shaped pillow, by hand! I wish my sewing skills had progressed at the same rate as yours!
The first thing I ever sewed was a funky yellow apron in 8th grade Home Ec. :)
I'm following Prudent Baby on twitter! :)
Mine was a cat pillow with my grandma...never really finished it on that trip, and I think she still has the pieces almost 15 years later!
The first thing I remember sewing was a shirt - knit fabric, with stripes. Talk about a nightmare!
I follow PrudentBaby on Facebook and Twitter
A turtle pin cushion, which I still have and I think I was probably 9 or 8. All sewn by hand.
The first thing that I sewed was a "dress" for my barbie doll. Really it was a tube of fabric, but I thought it was beautiful!
In Girl Scouts, I made christmas ornaments, and of course sewed on the patches.
The first thing I ever sewed was an apron. My grandmother helped me make it so that I could earn a Girl Scout badge...
My first sewing project was with an elderly lady who lived across the street from me. I still have my lined black and white purse made on an old Singer pedal sewing machine. It is a wonderful memory!
A quilted pillow in HomeEC!
I like you guys on Facebook!
I follow on facebook.
The first thing I made with my sewing machine was a really ugly and stiff blue shirt.
I hand sewed the elastic on my ballet shoes for years before that. :) My mom couldn't even sew a button - I guess I'm super crafty by rebelling :)
I have never sewed anything, but I really want to learn how. What better way to learn then through this book where all you have to do is sew in a straight line - can't be easier than that, right?!?
I sewed a pillow with my initial on it in 9th grade.
My first thing I ever sewed was a "rag quilt," you know, the flannel kind with the exposed hems that you snip to ruffle. Also I made 3 mini versions to use as burp cloths. I think they are cuter as a burp cloth than a blanket :)

I cannot wait to get a hold of this book! My first ever project were clothes for my dolls (not barbies, shorter). I was about 10. It was mostly tube dresses and long skirts - it was the 70s.

the first thing I ever sewed was with my mom on her mother's sewing machine. it was a lovely tux style shirt, including points in the front and tails in the back circa early 80s :). my mother even brought the sewing machine on our family vacation so that I would have something to do while we were there. I loved that shirt, but have no idea what happened to it.
hilariously, i insisted on mending my uncle's jeanjacket with my grandmother's ancient sewing machine when I was five. The machine actually runs on human power via a foot pump -- and I apparently did a good job! Now if I could only regain my 5-year-old motivation - hopefully this beautiful book will help!
The first thing that I sewed was a pot holder. My mom came up with the project for for my 5th grade class. She had a draw a picture with crayon and then ironed it on a white piece of fabric. Mine was the only one that had my name facing the right way because she forgot to tell everyone else that they needed to spell it backwards.
Facebooked! :)

Stumbling!!!! ;)
My first sewing project was last year (at the age of 28) I made some felt christmas stockings with our initials on them

I remember to sew asome bed sheets whe my mum boght the sewing machine, i was probably 12 years old!
Like so many others, I also sewed a pillow in Home Ec. in the 7th grade. It was in the shape of a giant ice cream cone.

The first thing I sewed was a pair of shorts in a 4-H sewing class. I won first place in my age division fashion show.
I don't remember what all I tried sewing, but I remember my mother trying to teach me when I was young and I would ALWAYS jam up the bobbin thread. She never could figure out what I was doing wrong.
I was in 5th grade and was doing the local 4-H sewing & fashion show. My mom helped me make a "nautical" inspired dress. It was navy blue with red, yellow & green boats around the hem. It also had a LARGE white collar....lovely. I was so proud of it and thought I looked so pretty. Great memories!!
I was eight, and I hand stitched a me and mommy set of wraparound skirts.
hmm... I believe my first sewing project was a skirt. I remember I wanted to fringe the bottom soooo badly but my mom was against the idea. eventually I did what I wanted and wore it for many years. :)
I made a bag in home ec in 7th grade. I still have it. Heh.
I think the first thing I made was a little potpourri teapot mat! haha. trimmed with lace i might add!
Seventh grade, whale pillow project, and I still have it somewhere! Now if only my sewing skils had progressed at the same rate as yours! I'm all about straight lines still so this would really be useful for me.
I follow PB on Facebook (somewhat obsessively one might say)
My first sewing project was yesterday! I made an laptop case/sleeve. (Truthfully it's the first one I finished). I'm tried to sew so many times with my mom's old 1970's sewing machine. I finally got a sewing machine for myself but lost to pedal during the process. I finally bought a new one last week. And I've been sewing like crazy. This week alone I made an apron, a pillow and a laptop sleeve. My new project is to make a duvet cover. I'm headed off to the fabric store now. [cross your fingers for me.:]
First thing I ever sewed was a locker pocket in seventh grade.
They didn't offer home ec in school, so I had my lessons with my aunt. I remember her signing me up for a class (Joann's?) one summer. I remember making a shirt and something else that has escaped my memory (probably a good thing)
I made a mini Clifford the Big Red Dog by hand.

my first sewing project was a crown for my son who wanted to be a scary bird queen for halloween.
My first sewing project was doll clothes that I made with my grandmother. I miss you Lee-Lee!
The first thing I sewed was an elf cloak for Halloween!
My first sewing project was a tank top for my daughter about 2 years ago. It was so bad but she loved it! What more can a mom ask from a 2 year old? :)
I liked Prudent Baby on facebook!
My first sewing project was with my granny, and we sewed a blanket and pillowcase for my Cabbage Patch Doll!
My first sewing project was in 7th grade home ec. We made letter pillows that spelled out our names. They were hideous.
The first thing I ever sewed was a little apron for my niece. I'm still a novice but I sure love sewing.
The first things I ever sewed was a drawstring bag in 7th grade home-ec. Looking back it was this horrible forever 80's floral pattern. It was fun to make it, but to this day I still hear my teacher yelling at us whenever someone dropped the presser foot on the machine ;)
the first thing i ever sewed was a scrunchie back in 8th grade! lol

hmmmmm -- the first thing i remember sewing is a tiny bag for my barbie - i was probably about 7! :)

I think the first thing I sewed (by hand) was a beanbag. And then five more. I was the oldest of four kids, and two more down the street, and we wanted to play hop-scotch 'properly.' So I set about sewing five beanbags by hand, and then we got dressed up like girls from the fiftys in poodle skits and saddle shoes, because when your a seven year old girl, half the game is what you wear.
Of course, the beanbags didn't last much more than a week.
I think the first thing I sewed was pillow and curtains for my room...I was probably in the 4th grade, long before an actual sewing class.
My mother always encouraged me to make things and experiment. 20 years later and I'm still doing the same thing.
I follow on FB!
When I was a kid, we could choose from doing textiles or wood work for three years in school. Now that was a long time, and many many projects came out of it, I'm sure, but the only thing I remember is my final year, when I made my own prom dress. It was made out of oxblood red satin, full length, strapless, with a black lace embellishment at the top and the bottom.
My neighbor (surrogate grandmother) taught me to cross-stitch and quilt when I was in the second grade. But it's just now---20 years later---that I'm learning to use a sewing machine! My first project was a very square (and very crooked) tea towel. :D

It was either a Christmas Tree shaped felt ornament (that still goes on my tree) or a patchwork doll blanket.... I was ??? maybe 5? Think my color choices have improved...not sure about my stitching ability tho....*grin*
my mother, who worked part time and raised three girls, used to sew my easter dresses, not to mention other fun things like dresses for my american girl doll and stuffed animals. the first thing i remember making was a pillow (of course! just a rectangle of fabric, right?) when i was around 6. it was far from perfect; the stuffing didn't reach all the corners and it was a bit wonky, but once i started, i couldn't stop. i had more pillows than i knew what to do with.
i sewed on and off during my childhood, but didn't pursue it again until i was in high school. i have since slacked off once again, but am so ready to learn and do more. i particularly want to learn to make some of my own clothes, as well as things for my baby boy, who will be here in october!
i have liked you on facebook!
when i was 5 i sewed a pillow with fabric scraps and stuffed it with cotton balls! i thought i was amazing. i kept making cotton ball pillows until i ran out.
I sewed a pink pillow when I was probably around 10 years old!
My first sewing project was a few refashioned skirts for my little girls that were dresses of hers the previous summer!

My first sewing project was a hair scrunchie in the 6th grade.
my first sewing project was altering a shirt that was too babydoll for me. but i made a gathered skirt and installed a zipper (beast!) for my first "from scratch" project earlier this year.
The first thing I ever sewed was a Christmas stocking for my daughter, after that there was no going back. I was hooked (and still am!)
I follow you on Facebook as My Own Road!
...was a hand puppet in grade one! I remember it was very simple, and it had googley eyes!
The first thing I sewed was an apron in home ec. class, it was a rather fetching stripey number! :)
I think in fourth or fifth grade, I made a pillow as a thank you gift for a friend.
My first real project was in Home Ec. 7th grade.
It was a wrap around pair of pants. White with purple ships was the pattern. I never wore them I thought they were ugly. I like quick and east things now. I love to get my 7 yr old grandson to help me sew. I keep my foot under the petal so we don't go too fast. We have fun and he can sew a straight line now. I have a grand daughter on the way so the cute dress will be a perfect start for her older wardrobe.
it was the 5th grade and we were learning about wagon trails. we had to make something we thought a child during that time might have taken along with them in the covered wagon. I made a teddy bear out of my sisters flannel shirt. it was the 90's so there were many a flannel shirt to practice with.
oh no its august 2!! womp womp womp
The first thing I ever sewed was ... a plain pillow! No surprise here, but I was quite proud since I never learnt to sew (my Mum was not a regular sewist and that is no longer taught in French schools since the 1960s).
And when you know that was nearly 2 years ago, you can imagine how badly I need this book!
Thanks for he chance!

At about age 8, I made a simple white top and gathered kelly green skirt for 4-H (and it was straight line sewing).
My first sewing project was a pair of boxer shorts in grade 11 which my husband still wears now almost 20years later. I have only just started sewing again this year and I'm loving it!
Last year- a make up roll up organizer. Got me into totes, pillowcases and now clothes! Always inspired to try something new from your website!
My first sewing project was a little pincushion in Home Ec. :)

I want to make that purple bird quilt!
I honestly don't remember the first thing I sewed! My grandma taught me when I was pretty little. I do remember making little hand-sewn pillows at my great grandma's when I was about 7 or 8. And using a machine to sew a pencil case in 7th grade home ec class.
I love this site; thanks ladies!
I must have been about 10 yrs old and I was part of a group of girls in my church that lead by a wonderfully crafty teacher. My first sewing projects was a felt pink elephant cushion. It was sooo cute. I remember the teacher and her mom thinking it was hilarious that I would insert the needle with one hand and pull it out with the other hand. They set me on the right path, though.
I think my first project was a pair of shorts. Or was it an apron?
I believe it was Home Ec class too and some sort of dish soap cover.
My first project was probably baby leggings for my little girl :)
What an awesome giveaway! The first thing I sewed was a baby blanket for my daughter in 2005! Ive only done a couple of small projects since but absolutely love to browse ideas for things I can make for my little girls! That's how I found this blog and will be following your tutorial to make my first peasant dress! :)
Following you on fb!
A really ugly sun hat with a big bow on the front for our Year 7 design and technology class
I think the first thing I made was a little vintage looking stuffed rabbit... in sewing class, too!
I think the first thing I ever sewed was with my mom - she used to sew alot and I wanted to try. made barbie clothes that I didn't do too much of the sewing on... but I love sewing now!!
the first thing i ever sewed was when i got my first sewing machine when i was 10 or 11 (i got it for hanakah, and i was begging and begging my mom to get me one, and i got one!) it was a little star shaped pillow and i forgot to leave a little gap to flip it inside out so it was inside out but i just stilled luuuvvved it and i was so proud of my self for sewing something on my own and a brought it around with me for awhile. and i made it on a super bowl sunday and i brought it to the party with me because it was at my friends house :) :P and i still sew today i hope to become a pro someday <3 ((and also i refused to get anybody's help to help me learn to sew, but i eventually taught my self))
:X :O :X :O

I was just married...in a new marriage, a new state, a new apartment and didn't know anyone but my husband. I went out and bought a sewing machine to occupy my time. I sewed a pillowcase cover to start "redoing" the bachelor decor in the apartment!
