Amy Butler's 5 Tips for Fitting Crafting into a Busy Schedule & A FABRIC GIVEAWAY!
Jaime and I have been day-dreaming about Amy Butler's Rayon and Corduroy ever since we caressed it at Quilt Market so we are delighted to have her here today to share a peek with you and give some away to a lucky Prudent Baby reader!
Wonder how The Great A.B. gets it all done? Read on as Amy, herself, shares her own 5 tips for fitting crafting and being creative into a busy schedule
Take it away Amy!...
Thank you so much to the ladies of Prudent Baby for letting me stop by to chat with you all today! I have some sweet images of my new fabric substrates and some tips on fitting crafting and creative time into a busy schedule that I would love to share with you all.
Let's get started with some inspirational images from my latest fashion fabrics. My Soul Blossoms Rayon and Corduroy are in stores now and the Voile and Organics are just around the corner! Have a look at these juicy shots and be sure to stop by your favorite quilt shop or online fabric store to get some of your own.
Fitting crafting and creative time into your already busy schedule can seem like an overwhelming task but with a few of my tips below you will be crafting in no time!
1 – Set aside a block of time every day to your creative pursuit. It won’t happen unless you carve the time out of your busy schedule.
2 – A new project can be overwhelming if you only look at the outcome you want to reach; break your project down and get started working a little bit each day – even if it’s only 10 minutes – the project becomes more manageable.
3 – Learning new skills and techniques is a great way to keep yourself going and you might find easier ways to accomplish your project.
4 – If it stops being fun, do something else, even if it's for a short respite.
5 – With your passion and creativity, you can make anything happen. It's all about loving what you do!
Bonus surprise time! To get you started on your crafting adventure we have put together an exciting giveaway. Leave a comment below to be entered to win some of my new fabric and a selection of sewing patterns! Giveaway closes at midnight, July 27th.
For extra entries:
Follow Prudent Baby on Facebook & Twitter. Share on Stumble Upon. Leave a comment for each! Come back and enter every day.
Thank you so much to the lovely ladies here at Prudent Baby for having me join them today. I always love stopping by for a new dose of inspiration. Be sure to stop by the Chronicle Books blog tomorrow, July 21st to see some exciting news about my Corduroy fabrics and a free pattern for you!

Mmmm Amy butler corduroy fabric. I love it!
With a new baby I've been having trouble fitting in sewing time so I've switched it up and I've been knitting more. I've found it's easier to stop and start in the bits of time I get and it's more portable. In my book any crafting is good crafting so it was all about adapting for me. Thanks Amy for the extra tips!
I love this fabric line, it's so bright and cheery!
Love amy butler fabrics and am looking forward to the organic line.
ooo, the voiles would be lovely for my summer wardrobe!
I´m so much looking forward to this new fabrics. That pattern and then that feeling, it just can´t go wrong. It will absolutley lighten up my ordninary days in the fall. And as a bonus I´ll also brigthen up my co-workers day. Just by wearing cloths in fabrics of AmyButler.
Love AB fabrics and patterns!!
free stuff?? free AWESOME stuff?? yes, please!
LOVE Amy Butler!
Love the retro vibe of the fabrics! I am especially in love with the yellow dress top right. Thanks for the tips!
Huge fan of Amy. Love every fabric collection she creates. Great tips too!
i love love love the fabric (like ALL amy butler fabrics, actually!)
I'm a huge fan of AB....can't wait to check out the new line!
Thanks for the tips for fitting what I want to do into my life. I have a few projects on the go that just don't seem to be getting done - with a 6 month old (tomorrow!) at home the day flies by! I am going to start by scheduling even just 15 minutes for sewing in the morning and see if that gets me back on track.
Thanks again!
Tracy
Absolutely LOVE the new fabrics!!! It can be hard crafting or sewing with kids, but getting even just a little bit done makes my day. A little crafting makes for a happy mommy :)
I'm not naturally talented with fabric like my mom is (thanks mom for all the bags, clothes, quilts, etc!) but whenever we go to the fabric store together I rush to the Amy Butler area. Thanks for making fabrics and patterns attractive again!
I sit here, early in the morning before my little ones wake up... Catching up on email while pumping breastmilk for my 5 month old, contemplating our cross (N to S) country move in 2 weeks. Wondering how my 4 year old will adjust to his new home and school... will I ever have time to be crafty again? I know I will, but sometimes it feels soo far away. Thanks for the tips, maybe I can make it a reality- naptime maybe?
Abby
This is such an exciting giveaway! Would love an excuse to get more sewing time in!
Well-timed! Thank you for the insight! Would love some new inspiring fabrics!
So true! Having kids makes these suggestions even more valuable. :-)
I love these fabrics! Thanks for the giveaway!
went to buy fabric yesterday, and talked myself out of it .. tired of buying the supplies and never finishing... great timing for this post !!!! thanks!
With a new baby (and a 4 year old), fitting crafting in is a topic on the forefront of my mind. I am going thru sewing withdrawl! The only thing I've sewn is my son's t-shirt for VBS because it was huge on him and that drives him crazy.
I started MAKING time in my busy stay at home mommy schedule about 6 months ago. This week we have been re-decorating and re-purposing the extra bedroom into my sewing/craft room!! Amy would be a delicious addition! Love love LOVE her fabrics. They make my little girl smile :)
I like working with rayon! I'm glad Amy's prints will now be available in different fabrics!
So pretty! I love the big flower floor pillow!
Great tips !! Thank you! Love the dresses, they look light and cool for summer! Love Amy Butler!
Thanks for the great tips!! I hope I will be able to get a few more things done!
I save my sewing for semester breaks and do it in large chunks, its the only way I can get the time!
The new fabric is gorgeous!
I love that v-neck sleeveless top, would be perfect for summer and layerin all year round. Maybe i can find time to make it after the kiddos go to bed!
Beautiful fabrics! I love the dress in yellow on the top right of the page! Anyone know what pattern it is?
great giveaway... would love to win
Thanks for the great post! Love all of the beauitful pictures and fabrics.
Thanks,
Melissa R.

these are absolutely fantastic! beautiful and inspiring... I feel like making all of these right now! isn't sewing just fab, I think so! I just love wiping things uo for my little girl, home and myself.
Love the fabrics! I need to reconnect with my sewing machine asap!
i love, love, love amy butler fabrics and patterns. i have been using her fabrics in my sewing for years and always look forward to her new collections!
Thanks for the tips - even Grandmas need help carving out time to craft! Would love some of AB's Fabrics - and MAKE time to create something from them.
I MUST have some of that corduroy, so thanks for the chance at the giveaway!
I definetly needed to hear that!! Setting aside time is so important! Amy Butler is amazing, and what a wonderful giveaway! I would be honored to win!!!
Amy Butler's collections is always absolutely stunning! love it!
This fabric is soooooo lovely! Very summery :)
Wow! The fabrics look amazing. I've been enjoying the cosmo bag pattern from one of the AB books. I get compliments on it all the time. Thanks!
WOW!! Those fabrics made me drool!!LOL I would love to get crafty with those!!!!!!!
This is such timely advice as I am trying to find ways to be creative, work, and spend time with my son. I think I can fit in at least ten minutes every day, so that's where I'm going to start.
Pretty pictures always helps me with inspiration too. The fabrics are lovely!
Love the giveaway and the tips...I am about to move and can't wait to create my new space were I can create and would love some new fabric for inspiration!!!
I love Amy Butler! Thank you also for the tips on how to craft in a busy schedule. As a mom to twin 2 YOs and one on the way, I am trying to find as much time as I can for myself.
How am I ever going to decide which print to buy? Guess I'll probably just have to find a use for all of them! :)
I'm a full time student and a stay at home mom to two kids (3 and 5). Most of the time the only way I can find time is if I do paper piecing, knitting, or embroidery while watching a movie with the husband.
Wow, I love the fabrics I would love to win, and thanks for the article. I really need to figure out how to fit crafting time in, I might just start scheduling it in, I have only sewn once since my son was born 8 months ago, and I miss it. with 2 kids it is so difficult. Thanks again!
Assigning time daily is what I find most difficult. I'm going to make it a priority! My whole life improves when I have my creative time.
This is great! I didn't know Amy Butler was coming out with some rayon, corduroy and voile. This will be great for garment making with the beautiful prints she has! I'm off to do some window shopping right now!
To think the right way is working for me: if I give myself the time to be creative and work with colors and shapes it gives me a lot of energy and I do the things not as fun a lot faster.
Thanks for tips and inspiration!
All of those fabrics are gorgeous; I would absolutely love to win any of them!
Gorgeous fabrics and great article! I switch back and forth and always keep quick projects in the works so I get the instant gratification of crafting without the guilt of too many WIPs going unfinished!
I am dying to see the courdoroy in person. Thanks for the tips.
Great tips! I agree with #3. Trying a challenge always gets me motivated to where I want to make time for crafting!
As a mother of two little ones, I certainly get the "work a little bit each day." Nap time is also a great time to craft!
Stunning collection, and great tips.
What wonderful tips - I am definitely a subscriber to the break it down into small steps everyday and you will reach your goal eventually. I think that is the story of my life!
The new collection is beautiful. I love that flower pillow, I know my son would love to have something like that to jump on (it would be a step up from the dog bed he likes to use now!)
My daughter is 8 months old now. I get overwhelmed with all I want to accomplish while she sleeps. I need to take your advice and break it down. I promised myself yesterday I wouldn't buy any new fabric until I start completing some projects. A giveaway though? I couldn't refuse that! Especially from one of my favorite designers:)
just looking at ABs bright fabrics makes me smile - great modern twist & perfect for encouraging my girls to learn to sew
AMY BUTLER - enough said!
Such pretty fabrics! Love her patterns too.
The fabric is so beautiful! I love the pictures maybe I will make something for me instead of just my daughter.
I was just thinking the same thing...gotta write "sewing" in on my schedule or it doesn't get done! (Especially when I get stuck perusing projects online!)
So beautiful! I totally agree with the 10 minutes a day, that's all my little ones will allow me to craft most days. I try to do projects that have small stages to them that I can do on the fly, like between chasing down my little monkeys.
I just started making clothes for my neice....this makes me even more excited about it! Can't wait to make her some corduroy jumpers!
Gorgeous fabric! I need to get better about fitting in at least ten minutes a day of "me" crafting time. I have projects to finish!
i love a.b fabric!
Amy Butler can do no wrong in my eyes! I'm grateful for her suggestions too! I've been having a hard time getting motivated again but her suggestions really helped!!
Oh my... I'm in luv with those fabrics and projects! I've known how to sew for years now, but at 44 I'm finally put it to good use; I have lots of crafting/sewing projects on my list! I have find that color and full of life patterns are so my style, a perfect match with Amy Butler! Please count me in! Thank you! :-)
Love all things Amy :-) It was good for me to read how fit in some "fun" time into my day. Working from home sometimes nearly means 24/7 and burn-out is just a day away so from now on I'm going to fit in 30 minutes of sewing/quilting/machine embroidering/painting/kilning EVERY DAY :D hmmm, maybe I'll need an hour :p
I LOVE Amy Butler fabrics! I would use them all the time if I could... I need more projects to do... humm....
Love the gorgeous fabrics! Thanks so much for the great tips!
I love this fabric!
How I love Amy Butler fabric! I would love to get my hands on some of her new stuff!

Love all your fabrics. They are so bright and happy. They give me the inspiration to get my craft room done and fit in sewing everyday. Sewing is a stress reliever for me. those fabrics are BEAUTIFUL! I want to go fabric shopping sooo badly now! pretty fabrics make me want to sew. I usually have afternoon naptime or right after bedtime as my "crafting" time of day. I feel so much better about my day when I get something done and take a little me time!
Love the fabrics! Love the tips! Love Amy! Love all around today :)
Beautiful fabrics! And thank you for the inspiration - sometimes it is really hard to find time for your passion.
These fabrics are amazing. I would love to make my daughter something with these.
beautiful stuff!!
Every single one of those creations is just georgous - I feel like I'm looking at an Anthropologie catalog! Some new fabrics for my stash would be amazing...
It's a good thing I have a boy so I don't feel like a bad mom admitting I'd totally use this awesome fabric on myself instead of sharing or making something for my kid! Lol.
Oh my, an Amy Butler giveaway...swoon
Such beautiful fabrics! I think they could inspire anyone to make time to craft :) With 16 month old twins, I have to make sewing time for myself...usually during naptime. Otherwise the girls just want to "help" too much :)
Gorgeous fabric and good advice on making time for projects!

Amy Butler corduroy sounds perfect for a fun fall bag. Thanks for sharing your tips - - I absolutely agree with the idea of breaking big projects into little tasks as well as giving yourself much needed breaks.
Love these! I might have to order some RIGHT NOW!
Amy does it perfect every time, her fabrics are so bright and cheery! I keep telling my little girl I am going to make her this skirt and just haven't found the time, maybe with these tips I will get my prudent butt in gear!
***Squeeeee**** I LOVE corduroy...like big-puffy-heart-want-to-drape-it-over-all-my-walls LOVE it - and then for it to be in gorgeous only-as-Amy-Butler-could-design prints?! I die a little!!

Great tips Amy! I love your fabric designs and hope I win!
Amy B. you never disappoint and are an incredible innovator! What inspirational patterns and designs you have created for our sewing pleasure! Can't wait......
I love that more designers are giving us different fabrics with their suburb styles. Thank you Amy Butler. I have recently fallen in love with Voile and it has inspired me to make clothing for myself. Now I look as cute as my daughters!
I love the sweet new fabric!
I have a full-time job, plus do a lot of volunteer work, and then have two toddlers at home (2 yrs and 1 yr). All these things keep me super busy! I've found that for me crafting usually is done in the late evening after the kids have gone to bed or on the weekends during their naptimes!
I've been bad about doing a bit every day. I had been doing some at night just before bed as a way to relax me. Then I got busy reorganizing the house and purging things we don't need. I'll need to get back into the habit of doing a little bit every day.
Thanks for the reminder!
Great fabric is everything.
I Love taking a beautiful piece of fabric and creating an exquisite article of clothing. LOVE Amy Butler's fabrics. :)
i love the new fabric and all of the clothing pictured! beautiful! and thanks for the tips :) i need to better about setting aside crafting time . . .

I have always loved Amy Butler. She is the reason I ever started sewing!!
Would love to own my first ever AB. Fabric!
I can't wait to try out some of that corduroy!! Thanks for the giveaway!
What lovely fabrics!
I have really been in a sewing rut since I burned myself out making a portable tea party. It wasn't hard and I loved doing it, but the felt placemats kicked my butt added with poor timing (2 days before the birthday party). I really needed these tips as a reminder to get back in it with small steps instead of looking always at the final product. Thanks Amy (and Prudent Mamas)! Guess I'm off to Citycraft because we all know the best part of sewing is buying the fabric!
Setting aside the same time every day is a great idea. I don't do enough of that!
I am drooling. If only I could touch through the pictures! Oh the plans I have for this fabric, if only my budget matched them.
I'm so excited to see Amy's designs in new fabrics! I am really into making her Birdie Sling pattern right now!
Amy Butler fabric is so inspiring! Anything I've made with it, just looks good and I love it!
Love that fabric!
Great suggestions. Now that I have a little one running my life, I suddenly have a stronger urge to be crafty, and far less time to do it. I think I'll have to take some of those tips and put them to use!
I love, love, love Amy Butler fabrics. They just bring a smile to my face!!
Printed corduroy?! I have so many projects that would be perfect for!!
i love amy butler's work, and this line is amazing- the colors make everything pop. great tips too, because sometimes it is hard to justify time to yourself to craft!
asdrexler at gmail dot com
So exciting! I love beautiful fabrics!
I think tip 1 is the most important. If you don't schedule time for crafting, it gets pushed to ...later...maybe. And eventually just doesn't happen
lauraebier at gmail dot com
I love Amy Butler patterns! They always inspire me.
How exciting. I love cordouroy and wonder if I could use it as a medium weight fabric? I'm looking for fabric to make the modern diaper bag, also Amy Butler design for myself. Baby due Dec 14th. This is perfect timing for me, thank you so much. Now I have to go shopping and investigate before I start buying!

Love love love Amy Butler! I made easter dresses for my daughters out of this line. So bright and original.
Still can be a little tricky fitting in crafting time with small kids around. That leaves night time though!

I am a brand new sewer - only completed 3 projects so far but I really look forward to learning and making awesome "stuff".
Amy Butler was the first fabric designer that I fell in love with. Up until that point I never even thought about people designing prints. That's also when I fell in love with sewing! Thank you Amy Butler!!!
Of course I love your facebook page!!!
Thanks Amy! You are truly an inspiration--not just in being creative, but in pursuing your dreams.
And I follow your TWEETS!
Just threw this in on StumbleUpon!!!
I want to touch that corduroy!!
Woot! I love crafting but have totally let it slide since I brought home baby. This would be good motivation to get started again!
With 3 kids (4yo, 2yo and 3mos old) and a passion (need) for creating & sewing, I've tried many things to fit my hobby into my busy schedule. The most unsuccessful as of late was locking myself in my sewing room (when baby was napping) and telling the other 2 boys to "play amongst yourselves". Yeah....that didn't work too well. It was hard to concentrate through the yelling...."mommy, we miss you!!"....REALLY?!? Well, maybe these tips will help me out in my never ending quest for more crafting time!! Thanks for the
mmm, i love corduroy and i love the colors and paterns in Amy Butler's fabrics.
All my "skills" are new as I have just taken the plunge into sewing and embroidery.. My bf's mom gave me a ton of embroidery patterns that she and her mom had clipped from magazines from the 50's to the 70's! I like to sneak a few stitches in while I'm waiting for dinner to finish, or while watching TV.. It's nice to see things come to fruition.. I like to set small goals, i.e. tonight I will cut one of the fabrics for a quilt or I will finish one petal in my current embroidery project :) So far, so good!
I love Amy Butler!
I liked you on fb
Gorgeous - enter me please?
I think I shared on SU. but I'm new to that.

I need to get back to sewing more! Thanks for the tips.
