Ribbon Barrettes
I've mentioned my LOVE LOVE LOVE for Craft Snob before so I'm so excited that Sara is here to share a DIY for her adorable twist on 80's style ribbon barrettes. Did anyone else make/wear these the first time around? Ah memories! We need some! Take it away Sara!
Have you seen 80's ribbon barrettes around? I've added a twist of my own to these oh so fun barrettes.
Start with a basic metal barrette. Cut a 24 inch length of 4mm ribbon. Open the barrette. Place the middle of the ribbon under the opening end of the barrette. Hold in place. Pass one side of the ribbon through the barrette. Pass the other side of the ribbon through the barrette.
Continue braiding the ribbon to the end of the barrette. Tie a knot.
This is what the typical 80s ribbon barrette looks like. But it's not me. I am going a step further.
Twist the ribbons together and fold in half. Roll the twisted ribbon to create a flower on the end of the barrette just like I did here. Use hot glue to secure the ribbon flower in place.

I think I still have one of these from the 80s. Much cuter with the flower than with the trailing ribbons. And much cuter in purple than in yellow and green ribbon.
I had those, but they were two-toned! With lots of ribbons trailing down. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, and I love the update!
I was actually at Hobby Lobby the other day, just wondering around, when these barrettes popped into my head. I thought about making them, but didn't know how, but now I do! Thanks! I actually remember wearing these until I was 10 ('95).
Oh, I had so MANY of these when I was a teenager! I love your rolled 'flowerknot'. I still wear those barrettes and have been thinking of doing this, but I think I'll use your knot, if you don't mind.

Can someone tell my husband that I NEED a girl and badly?! There are so many great tutes for girlies and I need one to be my model-I don't think my boys would appreciate it much ;)
I LOVED my barrettes like that when I was younger. I hadn't thought of them in years. I bet my two older girls would love them. Mine had the dangly ribbons, with buttons tied on ends, but I love your flower, it is much more modern!

My mom wouldn't buy me ribbon barrettes. I always had the plain metal "hair clippers." When I was a kid I refused to put my head under water in pools because I didn't want to get my clippers wet. Well they do rust, you know. I definitely wouldn't have wanted to get these pretty clippers wet.
Now, my banana comb... that was a whole different story. :) (And I did have a fancy banana clip with both ribbons AND pearls... so niener, niener, niener!)
I loved those ribbon barrettes! I used to wear them all the time. They were different colors and had ribbon hanging. I wore them on the days I didn't wear headbands (the kind on your forehead). ;)
I'm pretty sure that I was in kindergarden. I had crazy long hair and had quite the collection of wacky barettes and bobble-elastic things!

I never got to wear gorgeous barrettes like these from the 80's. I always wanted to. Thanks mom for giving me an androgynous name, a pixie hair cut and hand me down clothes from my sisters AND brothers. I was often mistaken for being a boy. Probably why I will never cut my hair short again.
Oooh.. love these!! Never did I have a chance to wear awesome ribbon barrettes... just the classic plastic ones. But I would so wear these now! And I'm checkin out Craft Snob right now!!
I had ribbon barrettes in so many colors, some even had bells on the tails. I can't wait for my daughter to have more hair so I can share these with her.
Unfortunately I don't have any barrettes like that. But the next time I'm out at Walmart or Target I'll be picking some up to make these! I love em, and I know my girls will too!
I don't remember these from the eighties!!! But they are super cute! Great idea.
I don't remember what I was doing the last time I wore one of these, but I guarantee I was wearing an off the shoulder sweatshirt, leggings, and mismatched neon tube socks with my Converse. I was probably skating. Or watching "Who's the Boss". Maybe reading Nancy Drew. :)

WOW! Memories!! My favs were red and white and had beads that dangled from the end of the ribbons that trailed from the barrette. I was skating at a skating rink holding hands with a boy (gush). My WHOLE outfit coordinated with those barrettes. Even my skates were white with red laces (Yeah I was "the stuff"). Now I am going to make new, fresh, hip barrettes for my girls and giggle as I do so. Thanks for the memories!
Great tute! I remember making these in grade school.
I was a bit young to make these the first time around, but that didnt stop my older sister from making them and then trying (not always painlessly) to put them into my hair ... and of course we matched our barrettes to our shirts, pants, socks - which were doubled, and stacked oppositely !!

I love these! I had just purchased the hairclips from Oriental Trading because they were so nostalgic. I thought my girls would have fun making them and perhaps we'd bring back those 80's barrettes. But I like the rosette idea even more. Thanks!
Oh man, the memories! I have a distinct memory of riding my banana seat bike, wearing my jamz shorts and jelly shoes - barrette ribbons streaming behind me. I am going to have to make a few for myself - love the little rosette on the end.
These bring back so many memories. I remember making tons of these and wearing them with everything and my jelly shoes. I am definitely going to make my daughter some. Thanks for reminding me and helping me remember all those great memories.
