Giveaway: Handmade Beginnings by Anna Maria Horner

A few weeks ago I shared some of my favorite Crafty Books. You may have noticed I have two copies of Anna Maria Horner's lovely book Handmade Beginnings: 24 Sewing Projects to Welcome Baby.  Well, I figured I don't need two, so I thought I'd give one away to a Prudent Mama who would use it and love it.

Check out our interview with Anna Maria, in which our readers asked her questions and she gave us the scoop on how she gets it all done, and some great advice for sewing and crafting. Also check out some of the beautiful projects in this book...

Wouldn't any of these projects be so lovely in any of her fabrics, especially her new collection Lou Lou Thi? So, to enter to win your own copy of Handmade Beginnings, just leave a comment on this post telling us your own handmade beginning - the first sewing project you ever did. If I can remember that far back, I think my first sewing project ever was a stuffed dog! I wish i knew where that thing was, maybe I'll find it stuffed in a closet at my mom's house.

Leave your comment anytime between now and midnight PST next Tuesday July 26th. We will randomly select a winner and announce here on Prudent Baby. For extra entries, tweet, stumble, or share the giveaway on facebook, and leave a comment each time letting us know. Come back every day for new entries. Good Luck!

I made a pocked for a pair of cammo pants. Mom had made the pants, but left out the pocket because the pedal on her machine died. Determined, I hand-cracked the wheel to make the pocket, so she could attach it.

I remember so clearly what my first sewing project was! I made a pair of culottes out of a knit fabric with horizontal stripes and a mustard and brown palate. It sounds so awful now but I was so proud that I matched the stripes well.

The first thing I can remember making was a very small pillow as a gift for my mom. I had one of those little looms and spent hours weaving a heart shape on to a rectangular piece. Then I put a backing on it and filled it. I must have been 7 or 8 tops. My mom still has that silly little thing; I'm now 32.

I made a pillowcase for my body pillow when I was about 13. I found 2 yards of flannel and thought it would make a nice cover. I didn't cut the fabric at all before sewing, so it ended up being about 18 inches too long, but for some reason that didn't bother me. I used that pillowcase for years.

My first first was sewing buttons on scraps of cloth. My Mum had a "button box" filled with all kinds of treasures, and I loved picking my favourites to sew on. I collect vintage and new buttons now myself, in a cigar box (though I'm about to outgrow it!), due to those fabulous memories!

My first ever sewing project was this bitty baby dress. My sewing teacher (yes, I had one in an all girls Catholic school) gave us the pattern. My mom and I invested in some gauzy cotton and then I made a dress with lots of help from my mom. It turned out cute enough to gift to my neighbour's wife who had a bitty baby to fill in the dress.

I just cast my mind right back, beyond the dolls house clothes and soft furnishings, beyond the simple 'embroidery' on holed cloth in my first class at school... and found a very old memory of sewing a piece of felt. Sewing it up so that it turned into a big ball of felt, laced with uneven criss-crossings of thread. I honestly think this must have been the first thing I ever sewed. I was probably about four!

My first sewing project was rather ambitious, looking back.
My friend and I raided her mothers sewing bin for offcuts and then sewed them together patchwork styles so that we each had a panel. Then, for some reason, we cut up an emergency survival blanket (you know, the tin foil type ones!) and made them into a sort of tube, with the patchwork panel at the front. Patchwork, metallic skirts! We thought we were pretty special, until we tried to sit down and they fell apart. Hhaha.

I remember taking a sewing class the summer I turned 8. One of my first projects was a basic tote bag, which I made as knitting bag for my aunt in San Francisco, who I worshipped because she would take me around the city and buy me macarons, stationary from Japantown, strings of paper lanterns from Chinatown, and clam chowder breadbowls eaten on the edge of pier 42. To a young girl from a small town in Idaho, this was the highlight of my life. Now I'm in grad school in the bay, and spend every Sunday with her and my little cousin, doing the same things. And knitting, which she taught me to do. I'm happy to report she still uses my tote, even if all the seams are crooked.

I was a new wife and desperately needed curtains for our tiny one-bedroom apartment. There were no blinds, so in order for any privacy, I had to do something! My mom, a former avid seamstress, pulled out her machine. She showed me multiple times how to thread the needle, thread the bobbin, and pin my seams. The curtains were sufficient. I didn't put them back up when we moved. But I am thankful for the use we got out of them. More importantly, I'm thankful for the time spent with my momma.

Fabric was way too stiff and my gathers were horrendous and didn't even think about using same coloured thread to hide the crooked top stitching. This was about 4.5 years ago. My very first sewing project was a denim purse that I made in middle school. I had always wanted to sew but nobody ever taught me (my mom didn't know how), so I took it upon myself to cut up a pair of old jeans and hand-stitch them into a little purse. The front pocket was the front, the back pocket was the back, and I made the waistband into a shoulder strap. I was so proud of that purse!!

This book looks amazing, I'm expecting my second little one in December and I'd love to use some of these projects!

hmmmm... i honestly cannot remember for the life of me! but this book would be perfect... i am 7 months pregnant, and obviously have pregnancy brain!!! i do remember learning in sewing in middle school how to sew a straight line by using loose leaf paper and no thread. and then, by the end of that class, i made the dress i wore to the seventh grade dance! she must have been one heck of a teacher!

thanks for the chance to win!

I didn't learn to sew until well into my 20s, the first thing I made was a pillow for my couch with rope cording trim around the edge - took forever!

My first sewing project was a hair scrunchy. Eighties kid, right here!

P.S. I think you may have put the giveaway ending date wrong. It says July 26th, but you posted this on August 3rd.

The first sewing project that I remember was a red shirt that my mom helped me to make to wear to summer camp. I have a picture of it...somewhere.
