New Music
The Husband hooked me up with a bunch of new music for Christmas. It wasn't hard to do, I hadn't acquired a new CD in over a year. I was in a rut of listening to Scarlet's Dance Attack 2009 on repeat under the dictatorship of a three year old. He saw that an intervention was required. Now if you are a music buff, most of these gems won't be news to you but if, like me, you have been hiding under a rock for a while, you might find something you like! And most of the digital versions of these CD's are between $5-$10 on Amazon! I have found great joy listening to grown-up (but mostly child-friendly) music while I hide in the craft cave til the week hours of the morning.
Jaime and Carleton are much better at keeping on the cutting edge, maybe she will have some more obscure stuff to add. Maybe you do too! Please do leave a comment. If we like it best, you will win a yard of pom-poms from my stash!

OMG! Andrew Bird is AMAZING! I saw him a couple of years ago when he opened for Nickel Creek here... when you see him perform, he gives you inspiration and a whole new meaning to his art.
Thanks for the heads up! I have a couple of those cds already! I'd been wondering if the XX was any good. I really like that "islands" song. Do you like the whole album?
I used to know all kinds of obscure bands and stuff but then you have kids and the music gods send you to the back of the line. I'll have to check out some of the others you posted!
The first 2 on your list are my favorites! My husband recently turned me on to Mumford & Sons and I am in love. Arcade Fire is also great--they put on a cool live show (which I've seen only on Austin City Limits...lame). Looking forward to checking out the other albums you mentioned--I need a break from my 15 month old daughter's favorite CD!

First of all, The National High Violet is amazing. On vinyl it's somehow even better. But my current favorite grown-up CD that my 2- and 3-year-olds also LOVE (as in, they can sing several whole songs) is Tripping Lily (not at all hippy-trippy as the name might suggest). Ah, these are all such awesome suggestions! Thanks ladies. I, hilariously, also rely completely on my husband for music. If not, I would be stuck with what my 2 year old selects...not pretty. She has her own random names for them too which I have had to decipher slowly over the past few months. One is the "chicken song" and it has nothing to do with chickens. Imagine a 2 year old in the back seat repeating "chicken, chicken" over and over until you happen to land on the appropriate song. Anyway, from my husbands picks I would also suggest Jonsi's new "go live" and Sufjan's latest. Blitzen Trapper is also great.
You mean there are other songs than "if you're happy and you know it?" I'll have to check these out ;) I'm still a sucker for old school Jewel.

I got a live Phish DVD for Christmas and my son goes nuts for it! It makes mommy proud for sure. I've been a Keller Williams fan for many years and he just released an album titled Kids, but all his stuff is kid-friendly.

And for family/kids music, I can't recommend highly enough the Many Hands CD. It's a benefit CD for Haiti relief, and features a ton of great musicians, both new to the family music scene and acts that have been around for a while. The CD is great, and the radio show that spawned the label that spawned the CD is totally worth listening to. Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child; Indie music for indie kids. Bill is a great DJ, and the music is really good.

I feel your pain...I'm driving to work and realizing I've been singing along to Yo Gabba Gabba the whole way there. Sad! I'm totally in love with Gorilla Manor by Local Natives. Amazing!
um not trying to be a pain or anything but the BAND is actually called Freelance Whales and the ALBUM is called Weathervanes. It seemed like every other artist is listed band first and album name second. just trying to help!
i LOVE the black keys, we have a number of their albums and our two boys age 5 & 2 and a half will ALWAYS insist we play them when we're driving! yeah baby! :)

I just made the pillow dress and LOVE it. next time maybe I'll actually make it with a pillow the kids wont sit in front of the tv for 3 hours:-) Anyway, based on your above list I just wanted to let you know I think you'd like my husbands Americana album Eden. Definitely way late on this post, but the top three on your list are some of my favorites. How did we survive so long without artists like Mumford and Sons?? They do have one child-unfriendly song on their album, and it kind of sneaks up on you (though I'm sure you've heard it by now). Anyway, did Arcade Fire totally deserve their Grammy for Album of the Year or what? They're so creative!
