Playtime Placemats

You know how, when you make a changing pad cover or a crib sheet, you have little extra squares of fabric leftover?  I've been saving 'em up.  They've been making me crazy actually...I needed to do something with them to get them out of my line of sight besides shove them deeper into a box.  So when Scarlet recently took up tea parties I gathered 'em up and made some reversible mini-placemats.

Pretty fancy for a little lady, huh?  Super simple, completed during naptime, and the same DIY works for grown-up placemats too. And since I know you're going to ask: the table, chairs, and mini stoneware tea set are all from Ikea.  And so are the umm, plastic play wine glasses.  Pretend mommy juice!*

*Please tell me my child isn't the only one who says "mommy juice"

Reversible Playtime Placemats
The fabrics used for these placemats are Nicey Jane Wash Day Ticking in Dandelion and Alexander Henry Petite Granville in Pink.

1.  For each placemat, cut two pieces of fabric 8.5" X 6.5" (or 1/2" larger on both sides than whatever size you want your completed placemat to be).  Pin the fabrics together right sides facing:


2.  Sew around the edges with 1/4" seam allowance, leaving a hole for turning and back stitching at the beginning and end.  Trim your edges and clip your corners:


3.  Turn right side out and iron flat, folding the hole under:


4.  Top stitch 1/4" in from the edge all the way around, then right at the edge all the way around (to close your hole):

If you're using two different fabric colors, use a different shade of thread in the spool and the bobbin so you coordinate on each side:
